Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table provides data on the average hours spent by European citizens of different age groups on the Internet.

Overall, the age group of 16 to 20 recorded the largest amount of hours by both male and female, while 51+ age group of people contributed to the least hours.

In terms of the age group of 11-15, male accounted for 8 hours, while female spent only 6 hours. Likewise, the age group of 16 to 20, male was slightly higher than that of female, standing at 19 hours and 18 hours, respectively. This was followed by the age group of 21-25, male made up slightly higher compared with female, with 7 hours and 5 hours.

Nevertheless, both male and female showed different trend with elderly citizens. In the age groups of 31-50 and 51+, female was higher than that of male, with 3 hours, 4 hours and 2 hours, 3 hours. Meanwhile, the figure for 26-30 age group showed the same hours spent by both with only 4 hours .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the table and making relevant comparisons. The overview accurately identifies the peak age group (16 to 20) and the lowest group (51+). Data is selected well to illustrate these points, such as mentioning that the 16-20 group recorded the highest hours for both males (19) and females (18). Details for the remaining age groups are appropriately reported, and comparisons between genders are made throughout, such as noting that in the 31-50 and 51+ brackets, females spent more time online than males. The information is factually accurate based on the source table, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It opens with an introductory paraphrase, provides a distinct overview paragraph, and groups the body details logically by age brackets. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'In terms of the age group', 'This was followed by', and 'Meanwhile'. However, there are some minor mechanical or awkward transitions, such as 'Nevertheless, both male and female showed different trend with elderly citizens', which detract slightly from complete naturalness. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs, supporting an overall Band 6.5 or 7.0 score. Given the clear progression, a 7.0 is well justified.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, including terms such as 'average hours', 'citizens', 'age group', and 'elderly citizens'. There are attempts at less common phrasing, but some lexical choices are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'recorded the largest amount of hours' (rather than 'highest number') and 'contributed to the least hours' (where 'spent the fewest hours' would be more natural). Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary is adequate to convey the data clearly, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The table provides data on...' and 'while female spent only 6 hours.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing structures, particularly regarding missing subjects or pluralisation issues, such as 'male accounted for 8 hours' (should be 'males' or 'males accounted for') and 'showed different trend' (missing article). Additionally, some comparative structures are incomplete, such as 'male was slightly higher than that of female'. Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, supporting a Band 6.0.
