Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given table chart depicts the information about the European individuals of various ages spent overall time on networking sites. The data is provided in the form of years, genders and numbers.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that maximum number of persons are teenagers whereas least one are the redired people.

To start with, children from 11 to 15 are 14 in number where 8 are boys and 6 are girls. Further a huge number are the teenagers in which males and females are 19 and 18 respectively. Moreover, when it comes to adults, men are 7 and 4 while women are 5 and 4 in different age group.

Moving further, age group between 31 to 50 males are only 3 and females are 4 in numbers. In addition to this, for the last category the numbers are significantly declining which stops at 2 for men and 3 for women.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the table, providing an overview and detailing specific age groups. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the student states that for the 11 to 15 age group, 'children from 11 to 15 are 14 in number where 8 are boys and 6 are girls,' incorrectly adding the male and female figures together rather than reporting them separately. Similarly, the phrasing for adults combines age brackets clumsily ('when it comes to adults, men are 7 and 4 while women are 5 and 4'). While an overview is attempted, these errors in interpreting the raw data mean the task is only partially satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to an overview, and then detailing the specific data points in subsequent paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'To start with', 'Further', and 'Moving further' are used to structure the text, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is adequate, and there is a discernible overall arrangement, even though the logical progression of the body paragraphs is hampered by confusing data synthesis.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is somewhat limited and repetitive, with frequent inaccuracies. For example, the student writes 'redired people' instead of retired or elderly people, and misinterprets the data categories as 'networking sites' rather than general internet use. Phrases like 'maximum number of persons are teenagers whereas least one are the redired people' show basic lexical control and noticeable word-choice errors that occasionally cause confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is weak. There are numerous structural errors, such as 'The given table chart depicts the information about the European individuals of various ages spent overall time' (tense and relative clause issues) and 'age group between 31 to 50 males are only 3 and females are 4 in numbers' (lacking prepositions and subject-verb agreement). Errors occur frequently and sometimes impede communication.
