Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by reporting data from the table regarding average hours spent on the internet by various age groups. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the text claims the 11 to 15 age group used the internet (8, 6), which is understandable, but describes the 16-20 group as having values of (19, 18), whereas the data shows 19 for males and 18 for females. While some main features are captured, such as peak usage among 16-20 year olds and lower usage among older adults, the overview is rather simplistic and informal ('average of teenagers more use internet'). The response satisfies the minimum word count of 150 words (reaching 156), but the mechanical listing of numbers in parentheses restricts higher task achievement. It meets the criteria for Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is hindered by awkward transitions like 'Firstly', 'Now discuss', and 'Secondly'. Cohesive devices are frequently overused or misused, such as 'Now discuss the adults and youngsters the value of using the internet', which disrupts the flow of ideas. Referencing is also occasionally unclear. While there is a basic structural attempt at organising the essay, the mechanical nature of the links and structural slips prevent it from reaching a higher band. It fits the Band 5.0 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The student frequently reuses phrases like 'using the internet', 'the value of using', and 'age group'. There are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'Given chart illustrates about the value of people who spent average hours' and 'the value of using internet so less'. Uncommon vocabulary is largely absent or misused. While basic meaning is conveyed for most of the data points, vocabulary constraints and frequent awkward phrasings place this response firmly at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentences, but grammatical accuracy is quite low. There are frequent structural errors and missing auxiliary verbs, such as 'average of teenagers more use internet both male and female', 'older people use the internet they has less average', and 'both gender that using the internet the value are same'. Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with dangling clauses and run-on ideas enclosed in parentheses. Due to the high frequency of errors that occasionally cause confusion for the reader, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
