Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given table illustrates the number of hours utilise by European people on the web surface by males or females in all the age groups from 11 to 51 year.

Overall, the maximum amount of time in the use of internet was recorded by male and females group which was 19 and 18 in the age group of 16-20. Males had dominant figure in using web network except the two old age group.

The number of hours spent in using web network was almost same among the age group of 16-20 between male and female about 19 to 18 respectively. This figure was doubled than the age group of 11-15 which was 8 and 6 for boys and girls.

In contrast, 26-30 age group had remained the same at 4 hours among males and females. However, the 21-25 aged people spent 7 hours by males whereas 5 hours by females. Interestingly, the number of hours spent on internet had reversed in the age of 31-50 or 51+ in females. Therefore, females spend most of their time which was 4 and 3 hours than males which was 3 and 2 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses the prompt by reporting the main features of the table and making relevant comparisons. The overview captures the peak usage in the 16-20 age group and the general male dominance across most categories. Data points are accurately cited, such as the 19 and 18 hours for the 16-20 group and the comparative figures for the younger and older cohorts. However, there are some minor mechanical errors in data reporting, such as stating 'the age of 31-50 or 51+ in females. Therefore, females spend most of their time which was 4 and 3 hours than males', which slightly misinterprets the comparative structure. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed with adequate selection and reporting of data, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introduction and overview into body paragraphs grouped by age ranges. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the data. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'In contrast, 26-30 age group had remained the same' is logically awkward given that the groups are being compared rather than contrasted in a strictly opposing sense. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'females spend most of their time which was 4 and 3 hours than males'. Cohesive devices are present but lack flexible and seamless integration, placing this response solidly in Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'illustrates', 'maximum amount', 'dominant figure', and 'respectively'. There are several noticeable word choice and collocation errors, however, such as 'number of hours utilise' (incorrect grammatical form), 'web surface', and 'web network' (unnatural collocations compared to 'the internet'). Furthermore, the phrase 'two old age group' should be 'older age groups'. While these lexical inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching higher bands. The range is sufficient to meet the task requirements adequately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and comparative structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as 'number of hours utilise by' (should be 'utilized by'), 'Males had dominant figure' (missing an article: 'a dominant figure'), and 'This figure was doubled than' (incorrect comparative structure, should be 'twice as high as' or 'double that of'). Additionally, '26-30 age group had remained the same' incorrectly employs the past perfect tense. Despite these persistent errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, making Band 5.5 or 6 appropriate. On balance, the errors rarely impede communication, supporting a Band 6 score.
