IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of six different age groups.

Overall, it is clear that people aged 16-20 spent the most time online, while Internet usage generally decreased among older age groups. In most age categories, males spent slightly more time online than females, whereas people aged 26-30 spent similar hours.

To begin with, in the group 11-15 aged male spent 8 hours on internet while female spent 6 hours on average. Internet use then rose sharply among 16–20-year olds, reaching 19 hours for males and 18 hours for females, the highest figures in the table. However, a decline is seen for 21-25 aged with 7 hours for males and 5 hours for females.

Furthermore, 26-30 is the only age group where males and females recorded the same figure of 4 hours. Among those aged 31-50, females spent 4 hours online, compared with 3 hours for males. Finally, in the 51+ group, females again recorded a slightly higher figure at 3 hours ,while males spent an average of 2 hours.
