Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The table compares the average number of hours spent online per week by European men and women across six different age categories. Overall, teenager aged 16 to 20 spent by far the most time on the internet, while usage declined sharply with increasing age after that. In addition, males generally spent slightly more time online than females, except for the two oldest age groups where females were slightly more active.

Among the younger cohorts, Internet usage rose significantly with age. For children aged 11 to 15, boys spent an average of 8 hours online per week, slightly higher than the 6 hours recorded for girls. This figure more than doubled for the 16 to 20 age group, which showed the highest usage overall. In this bracket, males spent 19 hours and females 18 hours online, indicating a very similar level of engagement between genders.

From the age of 21 onwards, there was a sharp and continuous decline in Internet use. For those aged 21 to 25, the average fell to 7 hours for men and 5 hours for women. The 26 to 30 age group spent even less, at 4 hours for both genders. Interestingly, the trend reversed slightly for the two oldest categories. People aged 31 to 50 and those 51 and over used the Internet the least, but females spent marginally more time online than males - 4 hours versus 3 hours for the 31-50 group, and 3 hours versus 2 hours for the 51+ group.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student has provided an accurate and comprehensive response that covers all parts of the task. The overview clearly highlights the main trends, noting that the 16-20 age group spent the most time online, internet usage declined sharply with age thereafter, and males generally spent slightly more time online than females with minor exceptions. The body paragraphs effectively select, report, and compare data from the table, referencing exact figures such as 19 and 18 hours for the peak group and properly contrasting genders across cohorts. All information is accurate and directly derived from the visual data without any major omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas from an introductory overview to specific age-based groupings. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct phase of the data (introduction, younger cohorts, and older cohorts). Cohesive devices are managed well without being intrusive, utilizing transitional phrases such as 'Overall,' 'In addition,' 'Among the younger cohorts,' and 'From the age of 21 onwards.' Referencing is clear throughout, contributing to a smooth and coherent reading experience.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a wide and flexible lexical range suitable for an Academic Task 1 response. Vocabulary items such as 'cohorts,' 'engagement,' 'continuous decline,' and 'marginally' are used naturally and precisely to describe trends and comparisons. There are only very minor slip-ups in phrasing, such as 'teenager aged 16 to 20' (missing a plural 's'), but this does not impede communication. Overall, the vocabulary is varied, precise, and appropriate for the academic register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response features a wide variety of complex sentence structures used with a high degree of accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, and control over grammar and punctuation is strong. Good use of subordinate clauses and participial phrases is evident, such as 'indicating a very similar level of engagement between genders.' The minor error in noun agreement ('teenager' instead of 'teenagers') is an isolated slip and does not detract from the overall impressive control of grammar.
