IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This table provides information on the different age groups and how much time they spend on the internet based based on their sex. Age group of people between 16 and 20 are the most active on the internet as seen by their high hours on the intenet as compared to other age groups, 51+ people are the least active on the internet because of their lack of technology. The age group of female and male between the ages 26 to 30 spend the same amount of hours on the internet. After the age group 16 to 20 the hours spent on the internet by each gender decrease exponentially. However, the age group between 11 to 15 spend more hours on the internet than people older than 20. In this table, overall, the male seem to be more active on the internet compared to females except for age groups of 31 to 51+. Generally all of the age groups spend almost same hours on the internet except 16 to 20.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by identifying the key trends in the data, such as the peak usage in the 16-20 age group and the lower figures for older demographics. However, there are notable inaccuracies and unsupported generalisations. For example, the claim that 51+ individuals have low internet usage 'because of their lack of technology' introduces outside speculation not found in the table. Furthermore, the statement that males are generally more active except for age groups 31 to 51+ is mathematically incorrect when looking at the provided data (e.g., females aged 31-50 spend 4 hours compared to 3 hours for males, but females aged 51+ spend 3 hours while males spend 2 hours; however, in the 26-30 group both spend 4 hours). The overview is weak and confused in places. This performance aligns best with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response lacks proper paragraphing, consisting of a single block of text which hinders the logical flow and overall progression of ideas. While some cohesive devices are attempted ('However', 'In this table, overall'), their usage is sometimes clumsy and fails to properly link the sentences into a coherent argument. The transition between ideas feels disjointed, jumping from general statements to specific data points without a clear structural framework. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'after the age group 16 to 20 the hours spent on the internet by each gender decrease exponentially'. This level of organisation represents Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, relying heavily on phrases like 'spend time on the internet', 'age group', and 'hours'. There are some unnatural collocations and word choices, such as 'high hours on the intenet' instead of 'high number of hours' or 'heavy internet usage', and 'based based on their sex'. The attempt at using less common lexical items is limited, and there is a spelling error ('intenet'). The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, which corresponds to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text. For instance, 'Age group of people between 16 and 20 are the most active' suffers from subject-verb agreement issues. Another error is seen in 'the age group of female and male between the ages 26 to 30 spend the same amount', where singular/plural mismatch ('group' with 'spend') occurs. Punctuation is also weak, leading to run-on sentences such as 'Age group of people between 16 and 20 are the most active on the internet as seen by their high hours on the intenet as compared to other age groups, 51+ people are the least active...'. This earns a Band 5.0.
