Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by presenting some main features and making basic comparisons. An overview is attempted, noting that the 16-20 age group spends the most time and the 51+ group spends the least. However, the selection of data contains some inaccuracies, such as stating that males and females from the 16-20 age group spend 18 and 19 hours respectively, when the table shows male at 19 and female at 18. Additionally, some ideas are presented as a list of disconnected details rather than a fully synthesized report. To reach a higher level, the response needs to more accurately report data without minor reversals and present a more fully developed overview with better-integrated comparisons across all categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation in the response, with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs dedicated to specific age brackets. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the arrangement feels somewhat mechanical due to repetitive sentence starters like 'In contrast' and 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is attempted, but transitions between ideas lack smoothness. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that information flows logically from one point to the next without abrupt shifts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are several spelling mistakes, such as 'spend om imtermet' instead of 'spent on the internet', and awkward word choices such as 'age group belong to' and 'spend a little time'. The range of vocabulary is restricted, relying heavily on repeating the same basic words and phrases throughout the text. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items with greater precision and eliminate basic spelling and word choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and repetitive subject-verb-object patterns. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, as seen in dangling modifiers and awkward phrasing like 'the age group belong to 51+ they spend less time'. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and subject-verb agreement issues such as 'both male and female spend equal time'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student must increase grammatical accuracy and practice using a wider variety of error-free complex sentence forms.
