Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The data table illustrates the average amount of time that European people in different age groups spent on the Internet.

Overall, the 16-20 aged group recorded the highest average Internet usage, while those aged over 50 recorded the lowest. The 26-30 age group was the only one in which males and females followed the same trend, while Internet usage generally declined with age.

Among European aged 11-15, males spent an average of 8 hours online, compared with 6 hours for females. This figure was considerably higher among 16-20-year-olds, who recorded 19 hours for males and 18 hours for females. In both age groups, males spent more time online than females. The same trend was observed among the age group 21-25.

Meanwhile, the 26-30 age group remained the only one in which both categories spent the same amount of time online, at 4 hours each. Moving on to the 31-50 age group, the trend was reversed, with males spending 3 hours online compared with 4 hours for females. Among those aged over 50, Internet usage fell further, to just 2 hours for males and 3 hours for females.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and effectively reporting the main features of the table. You successfully identify the key trends, such as the peak in internet usage among 16 to 20-year-olds and the general decline in time spent online as age increases. Data is accurately selected and cited to support comparisons, such as noting that males spent an average of 8 hours online compared to 6 hours for females in the 11-15 age bracket. While the selection of data is generally thorough, the observation that the 26-30 age group was the 'only one in which males and females followed the same trend' is slightly imprecise, as consumption also remained equal or followed parallel patterns in other ways. However, your overall response is well-supported and clearly highlights the most significant features of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your writing demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the response. Information is structured effectively, beginning with an introductory paraphrase of the prompt, followed by a concise overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs broken down chronologically by age groups. You use a good range of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Meanwhile', 'Moving on to', and 'Among European aged'. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently to separate distinct analytical points. While cohesion is well managed, occasionally smoother transitions between the complex comparisons could elevate the flow further. Overall, the progression from general trends to specific data points is handled with clarity and purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary for this task, successfully incorporating less common items with an awareness of style and collocation, such as 'average amount of time', 'considerably higher', and 'the trend was reversed'. Word choice is generally precise, allowing you to report figures and comparisons clearly. There are very few lexical inaccuracies, though minor phrasing issues appear, such as writing 'Among European aged 11-15' instead of 'Among Europeans aged 11-15'. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout, and your vocabulary choices effectively avoid repetitive phrasing when describing statistical changes and demographic categories.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

This is a strong performance featuring a wide range of complex structures, with the majority of sentences remaining entirely error-free. You demonstrate excellent control over grammar and punctuation, successfully handling complex relative clauses, participial phrases, and comparative structures such as 'while those aged over 50 recorded the lowest' and 'the 26-30 age group remained the only one in which both categories spent the same amount of time online'. Verb forms and tenses are used accurately to describe past statistical data. Only very occasional minor slips occur, such as the slight phrasing awkwardness in 'the 16-20 aged group', but these do not detract from the high overall standard of grammatical accuracy.
