Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a rudimentary summary of the data. While the student attempts to report some figures, the overview and comparisons are poorly formulated and lack clarity. For instance, the statement that the male ratio was highest in all age groups 'rather then two age group' is confusing and inaccurate regarding the actual data. Additionally, some figures are lifted directly with limited selection or synthesis, and key trends across the age categories are not fully or clearly developed. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to provide a clear, distinct overall trend in the introduction or overview, select the most salient features rather than listing every single data point, and ensure accurate comparisons without confusing contradictions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, featuring distinct paragraphs that split the age groups into two halves, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively, such as the heavy reliance on transitional phrases like 'ON THE ONE HAND', 'ON THE OTHER HAND', and 'AND LAST'. Furthermore, referencing and pronoun use are faulty, making it difficult to follow the logical connections between ideas. For instance, phrases like 'BOTH SIDE HIGHEST 19 IN MALE AND 18 IN WOMEN SIDE' disrupt the flow of information. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive links, ensure smooth transitions between sentences, and organise the data logically without relying on rigid, formulaic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, which restricts the precision of the report. The student relies heavily on basic terms and repeats words like 'ratio', 'side', and 'quantity' across multiple sentences rather than varying their language. There are also notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'tabular chart' and 'age agoup', alongside unusual phrasing like 'female quantity was 4'. While communication is not entirely blocked, these errors and the narrow vocabulary range constrain the quality of the writing. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire to include more precise academic vocabulary for describing statistical trends, such as proportions, figures, and age brackets, while ensuring correct word formation and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple and repetitive sentences describing individual data points. When the writer attempts more complex structures, they are frequently faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and prepositions, such as 'MALE RATIO AGAIN LOWEST AS COMPARED TO FEMALE SIDE 2 IS MALE'. Additionally, punctuation is weak, and the entire response is written in capital letters, which is inappropriate for an academic task. To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with accurate grammatical control, paying closer attention to auxiliary verbs, articles, and sentence boundaries.
