Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task by reporting the main features and making some comparisons, such as noting that the 16-20 age group had the highest figures. However, the overview is limited and contains confused statements, such as 'male ratios is the highest than female' and 'in the women side had the highest ratio is eighteen only', which fail to accurately summarise the broader trends across the entire table. Furthermore, the reporting of data relies heavily on listing individual numbers for every single category rather than properly selecting and contrasting the most significant patterns. While all parts of the data are touched upon, the lack of a clear, coherent overview and the mechanical recitation of figures keep the response at this level. To improve, the writer should develop a stronger, more accurate overview highlighting main trends and group data into logical categories rather than going through row by row.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response attempts a logical structure by dividing the body paragraphs into different age ranges, signalled by transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, the overall progression is weakened by repetitive phrasing and poor referencing. The mechanical listing of data points creates a choppy feel, and the use of cohesive devices is frequently awkward or inaccurate, such as 'Also, in 21-25 age group male ratio was 7 and female ratio is lower than male side is 5 only.' Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks fluency. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure smoother transitions between ideas, avoid repetitive sentence openings, and use referencing words more naturally to link comparisons across the data categories.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
Vocabulary usage is basic, repetitive, and heavily reliant on direct lifting or awkward phrasing from the prompt, evidenced by repeated expressions like 'male ratio', 'female ratio', and 'time spent ratio'. There is a very limited range of vocabulary, and noticeable lexical errors occur throughout the text, such as 'tabular chart' instead of table, and referring to numerical data values as 'ratios'. These inaccuracies and the lack of less common lexical items restrict the precision required for Task 1. To move up, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of vocabulary related to data trends—such as proportion, figures, average, and consumption—and demonstrate better control over word choice and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic compound constructions with frequent structural errors. There are noticeable issues with subject-verb agreement and article use, such as 'male ratios is the highest', 'in the women side had', and 'in the age group year 16-20 male ratios was very high is 19'. Punctuation is also weak, leading to run-on structures where clauses are strung together without proper delimitation. While simple statements can generally be understood, errors occur frequently and cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to practice forming accurate complex sentences, maintain consistent tense and subject-verb agreement, and eliminate basic grammatical slips.
