Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I have deeply examined the table and fetched the all sort of important information in it. It shows that Internet is been used in Europe in different ages of people, whether he/she is a children or an old person, everyone is using Internet in their own way. Here in the table it is divided into male and female on the basis of their usage of Internet. In both genders the most usage of Internet is in the ages of 16 to 20. This is the age in which a person is being introduced to the world and here it is acceptable. The next most usage of Internet in both male and female are of ages 11 to 15. This is a huge moment of concern for parents and guardians of a child for that much use of the Internet. Other ages do also fits in the table and have their own usage of Internet such as ages 21 to 30. But these are not as much as the earlier ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student identifies the main peak in internet usage at ages 16 to 20, the rest of the data is only superficially discussed with vague generalisations such as "Other ages do also fits in the table". Crucially, the response includes inappropriate personal commentary and subjective opinions—such as stating that the 16-20 age group is "being introduced to the world and here it is acceptable" and that the 11-15 usage is "a huge moment of concern for parents"—which are not required or suitable for an academic report. Furthermore, specific data points and comparisons between male and female usage are largely omitted, limiting the development of the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text demonstrates some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression or logical structure appropriate for an academic report. The response lacks proper paragraphing, being presented as a single block of text. Cohesive devices are weak, repetitive, and at times inaccurate, such as the abrupt transition "Other ages do also fits in the table". Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of information across the limited data points presented.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Vocabulary use is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student relies on basic and repetitive language, such as repeating phrases like "usage of Internet" multiple times. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word formations, including "fetched the all sort of important information" and "ages of people", which cause some difficulty for the reader. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are absent, restricting the score to this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is limited, relying mostly on simple and faulty complex structures. There are frequent errors in grammar, verb forms, and agreement that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include "Internet is been used", "children or an old person, everyone is using", and "Other ages do also fits". Articles and prepositions are also handled inconsistently throughout the text, reflecting a lack of control over basic grammatical patterns.
