Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table shows the data related to different age groups of european citizens who spend average hours on using the internet.

Overall, european males spend most hours using the internet compared to females and this trend was mostly seen in younger indviduals. The least amount of hours spent on the internet was by elderly citizens.

Technology is a lot common in adults of a society and this table shows exactly that adult europeans aged 16-20 spent almost 19 hours consuming the internet compared to elder individuals who only used it for 3 hours. Other age groups also spent a significant amount of time on the internet like teenagers who consumed the internet for 8 hours on average. Moreover, europeans aged 26-50 used internet for only 4 hours on average.

The table also presents the gender based data about the consumption of the internet by europeans. According to the table, male gender dominated in the use of the internet compared to females. Males aged 16-20 spent the significant amount of hours on internet compared to females the figure was 19 and 18 respectively. Moreover, this trend remained same across all age groups but the number of users fluctuated. However, Only one age group aged 26-30 had similar number of users in both gender groups which was 4 individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the table, attempting to provide an overview and some key comparisons, such as noting that males generally spend more hours on the internet and that the 16-20 age group has the highest usage. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately reported. For instance, the student states that 'adult europeans aged 16-20 spent almost 19 hours consuming the internet compared to elder individuals who only used it for 3 hours' (misclassifying 16-20 as adults and 31-50/51+ as elders inconsistently), and incorrectly states in the final paragraph that 'the number of users fluctuated' when the data represents average hours spent, not the number of users. Furthermore, the claim that 'Only one age group aged 26-30 had similar number of users in both gender groups which was 4 individuals' misinterprets the metric as a headcount of people rather than average hours. To reach a higher level, the student must accurately interpret the data axes and fully develop comparisons without misstating what the statistical units represent.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, moving from an introduction and overview to body paragraphs detailing age and gender trends. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices to signal progression, such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'According to the table'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'Technology is a lot common in adults...' abruptly lumps teenagers and older groups together, and referencing within sentences becomes confused, such as 'the figure was 19 and 18 respectively'. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should ensure smoother logical transitions between sentences, use more varied and accurate cohesive devices, and maintain strict clarity in how pronouns and referents point back to the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'dominated', 'fluctuated', and 'consumption'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent the response from achieving a higher band. For example, phrasing like 'spend average hours on using the internet' is awkward, 'Technology is a lot common' contains a non-standard modifier, and verbs like 'consumed' are used rather repetitively and unnaturally in place of 'spent' or 'used'. Additionally, confusing 'average hours' with 'number of users' reveals lexical and conceptual limitations. To enhance lexical resource, the writer should focus on precise collocations related to data reporting and avoid informal or imprecise expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures and relative clauses. There are some error-free sentences, and punctuation is generally manageable. However, a noticeable number of grammatical errors persist, including missing articles ('european citizens', 'male gender dominated', 'significant amount'), preposition errors ('spent average hours on using'), and minor structural awkwardness in complex sentences. These errors rarely impede overall communication, but they restrict the response to this level. To achieve a higher band, the writer should focus on mastering article usage, refining prepositional phrases associated with statistical data, and ensuring greater control over complex sentence construction.
