Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table chart illustrates about different age groups of male and female in different ages. There are different categories in ages were shown in this picture.

To begin with, in catagory male and female the maximum data was covered in the age group sixteen to twenty which is 19 and 18 which is followed by age group 11-15 which is 8 and 6 and the minimum data was covered by age group more than 51 years old male and female categories.

Additionally, in the group 26-30 male and female covered similar data which are 4.

In my opinion, not only male covering more than female data in the age 16-20, but also in age 31-51+ female, also covering more than male data.

In conclusion, age groups 21-25 covered 7 in male and 5 in female. Moving forward, male is more than female in the age group from 11-25, but after 31-51+ female covered more than male.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While you attempted to report some of the main features, such as identifying the peak age group of 16-20 with 19 hours for males and 18 for females, and noting similarities in the 26-30 category, your selection of data lacks clear overall focus. Furthermore, including personal opinions ("In my opinion...") is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, where you must remain strictly objective. Several comparisons are also repetitive or imprecise, such as stating "male and female covered similar data which are 4", and the summary of trends towards the end is muddled. To reach a higher level, you need to select the most salient features more systematically, provide an overview without inserting personal commentary, and ensure all key comparisons are reported accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation with attempts at paragraphing, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Transitions between ideas feel mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on phrases like "To begin with", "Additionally", and "In conclusion", which do not always match the logical flow of a data report. For instance, putting an opinion paragraph in the middle disrupts the structure of presenting statistical data. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as when pronouns like "which" are stacked multiple times in a single sentence ("...which is 19 and 18 which is followed by age group..."). To improve, you should group related data logically, use cohesive devices more naturally to guide the reader through the trends, and ensure your paragraph structure follows a standard report format consisting of an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms such as "data", "group", "covered", and "age". Phrases like "maximum data was covered in" and "similar data which are 4" are unnatural and imprecise for describing statistical tables. There are also direct vocabulary errors and poor collocations, such as using "catagory" (spelling) and saying that a group "covered" a number instead of spending hours. To achieve a higher band, you need to expand your range of vocabulary by using more precise reporting verbs (e.g., "account for", "spend", "record") and varied nouns, while eliminating spelling and word-choice errors that make the writing sound overly simplistic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or overly stretched complex sentences that become grammatically tangled. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with run-on sentences joined excessively by conjunctions like "and" and relative pronouns like "which" (e.g., "...age group 11-15 which is 8 and 6 and the minimum data was covered..."). Preposition and article usage also need attention, such as "in catagory male and female" and "in the age 16-20". To progress, you need to practise forming accurate complex sentences with correct subordination, control your punctuation to avoid run-on structures, and ensure better agreement between subjects and verbs throughout your writing.
