Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the table, covering both age groups and genders. However, some parts are developed more fully than others, placing the response at this band level. An overview is attempted at the beginning, noting general trends, and key data points such as the peak usage in the 16-20 age group (19 hours for males and 18 hours for females) and the lowest usage in the 51+ category are successfully highlighted. Comparisons between males and females are made throughout the text, such as noting that males spent 8 hours while females spent 6 hours in the 11 to 15 age group. While the main features are captured, some details could have been integrated more smoothly into broader comparative trends to elevate the quality of the response, and 15 words copied directly from the prompt were excluded from the final word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response exhibits an overall coherent arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information into paragraphs, beginning with an introductory statement followed by body paragraphs detailing specific age brackets. However, the logical progression is occasionally hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices, such as the frequent use of transition words like 'Firstly' and 'In addition' in a repetitive manner. Referencing and linking between sentences could be smoother to ensure a clearer overall flow of information. While paragraphing is used to separate ideas, the internal cohesion within paragraphs sometimes feels disjointed, as seen in the sudden transition between general statements and specific data points. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic numerical data and comparisons related to internet usage. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and phrases, such as 'depicts the details' and 'levelled the numbers', but these attempts are accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For instance, phrases like 'the most numbers of hour spend' and 'spended' demonstrate difficulties with appropriate lexical forms and collocations. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, such as 'Relativly' instead of 'relatively', but they do not severely impede communication. To achieve a higher standard, the writer must expand their lexical range, utilize more precise academic terminology for describing statistical data, and ensure greater accuracy in word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures such as 'Whereas the older group which was from 51+ years spend lesser hours'. However, there are noticeable errors in grammar and verb tenses throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies like 'spended' and 'spend' instead of past tense forms, missing articles, and awkward prepositional usage within grammatical patterns. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning and communication is rarely impeded, they occur frequently enough to reflect this specific performance level. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over complex sentence structures, ensure consistent and accurate use of past tense verbs when reporting historical or given data, and minimize basic grammatical errors related to subject-verb agreement and article usage.
