Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially, attempting to present the main features of the table, but contains several inaccuracies and omissions in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the highest internet consumption is across '3 age groups' and incorrectly refers to the 31-50 age bracket as '31-35', truncating data and leaving the final sentence incomplete ('elders of age 5'). While an overview is attempted in the second paragraph, the overall picture of the data is not fully or accurately communicated. To reach a higher level, the response needs to select and accurately report all key trends and comparisons without misrepresenting the figures provided in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation to the response, with an introductory paragraph, an overview attempt, and body paragraphs discussing different age groups. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical flow between sentences and paragraphs. Cohesive devices are sometimes used awkwardly, such as 'albeit on the contrary', or are repetitive, which disrupts the natural reading flow. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is occasionally faulty, making it difficult to follow the relationships between ideas and data points. Improving the logical sequencing and ensuring smooth, accurate transitions between points would enhance coherence significantly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical issues include 'substaintially' (spelling), 'grown adults civilians', 'utilization', and 'neglection of the internet'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but inaccurate collocations and awkward phrasing prevent more precise communication. To improve this area, the student should focus on using standard collocations for describing data trends, such as 'consumption' or 'time spent', and ensure accurate spelling of common academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple constructions alongside faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('elderly individual had the reported'), incorrect prepositions ('male of same age group', 'consumed to which'), and awkward phrasing that impacts readability. Punctuation errors, such as missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences ('this trend was followed'), are also present. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to increase the variety of error-free complex sentences and maintain better control over basic grammatical patterns like articles, plurals, and verb forms.
