Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word length requirement of 150 words, as it contains only 48 words. Due to this severe under-length, the task is only addressed minimally. While the writer attempts to provide an introduction and a basic overview pointing out the 16 to 20 age group and the 51+ group, the complete absence of data reporting, specific figures, and key comparisons prevents any meaningful development of the task. To achieve a higher band, the response must be substantially longer, incorporate precise data from the table across multiple categories, and offer a fully developed summary of all main features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response is organized into a basic introductory sentence and a brief overview paragraph, which provides some rudimentary structure. However, because the text is extremely short, there is no real progression of ideas or extended body paragraphs. Transitional devices are largely absent, and referencing is basic, such as 'In contrast' used to signal the lowest age group. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to group information logically into distinct body paragraphs, utilize a wider range of cohesive devices to link ideas, and ensure a clear, sustained progression throughout a full-length essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, such as 'european male and female of distinct ages', 'spent time using internet', and 'amount of time'. There are noticeable word choice and grammatical form issues, such as 'european' not capitalized, 'male and female' lacking proper pluralization or nouns, and 'more common teenagers male and female'. The lexical range is minimally adequate for conveying a very simple idea, but contains errors that restrict precision. To reach a higher level, the student must incorporate a wider variety of less common academic vocabulary, use precise collocations, and ensure correct word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response exhibits a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of simple and slightly flawed complex clauses. There are noticeable grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('spent time using internet' instead of 'spent time using the internet') and awkward phrasing in noun groups ('teenagers male and female'). While punctuation is generally acceptable, the lack of varied complex structures and the presence of basic errors restrict the grammar profile. To improve, the writer should practice forming complex sentences with dependent clauses, ensure proper article usage, and maintain accurate subject-verb agreement and word order.
