IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table illustrates the average time european citizens spent on their phones using internet. The data is categorises between several age groups from 11 to 51 between male or female.
Overall, data shows that late teenagers, both male and female use internet excessively. Therefore, this rate gradually declines with age in both males or females.
Initially, the early teenagers from age 11 to 15 had shown less average time spent on the internet with 8 to 6 hours on average for both males and femles respectively. Whereas a rise in time spent is shown in data where average internet usage is about 19 to 18 hours for male and female respectively.
Moreover, this rate decrease to 7 and 5 hours in the age of 21 to 25 before forming a plateaue at around 4 hours from the age of 26 to 50. After the age of 51 males have spent only 2 hours on average on their phone whereas female internet usage is around 3 hours on average.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the table, covering age groups from 11 to 51 and comparing male and female internet usage. An overview is present, highlighting the peak in late teenagers and the subsequent decline with age. However, some parts of the data are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating that early teenagers had shown less average time with 8 to 6 hours when 16-20 year olds clearly peaked much higher. The response successfully covers the requirements for the higher band by outlining clear trends while showing glimpses of the top band through effective comparisons, though greater precision in selecting the most striking highlights would elevate the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory paraphrase to the overview, followed by chronological body paragraphs detailing specific age brackets. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response. However, cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical or faulty, as seen in transitional phrases like 'Therefore, this rate gradually declines' where the logical link is slightly strained. Referencing is generally clear, but devices are sometimes over-used or simplistic. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother, more natural transitions between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey basic trends such as 'gradually declines' and 'average internet usage'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'categorises' instead of 'categorised', 'plateaue' (spelling error), and 'female internet usage' where 'females' or 'female usage' would be more precise. Furthermore, minor word form errors like 'decrease' instead of 'decreases' demonstrate the limitations at this level. To improve, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire and pay closer attention to word forms, spellings, and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'Whereas a rise in time spent is shown in data where average internet usage is...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('data shows that late teenagers... use', 'the early teenagers... had shown', 'this rate decrease'), preposition errors ('in the age of'), and missing articles ('forming a plateaue'). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication. The presence of both simple and error-prone complex structures firmly positions the grammar at this level, and achieving a higher band would require greater accuracy and control across a wider variety of complex sentence patterns.
