Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table provides data about the average hours spent on the internet by European inhabitants of different age groups.
Overall, the age-group ranging 16 to 20 years, spend more time using the internet as compared with any other group. However, people having their age above 51 are less likely to use internet. Group of 11-15 years, has the second most number of hours in total.
An analysis of the data shows that the people who have their ages between 16 to 20 years have highest exposure time to the internet in total than any other other category with males using it for 19 hours and females for 18 hours. In contrast, people who are in their 50,s use it for only few hours with males and females for 2 and 3 hours respectively. Among the other groups, it is noticed that an age group of 11-15 years also spend considerable time and the both genders use internet for almost 14 hours of total.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and highlighting key features and comparisons. The main trends are correctly identified, such as the peak internet usage among the 16 to 20 age group and the lowest usage among those aged 51 and over. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the student states that the 11-15 age group totals almost 14 hours for both genders combined, whereas the table displays separate figures of 8 for males and 6 for females (which do sum to 14, but phrasing it as 'both genders use internet for almost 14 hours of total' is slightly confusing). Additionally, spacing errors in the introduction and overview slightly detract from the polish. To reach a higher level, the student should ensure precise reporting of data figures without awkward phrasing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introductory paraphrase and overall summary to specific body paragraph details. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Among the other groups'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, and paragraphing could be structured more cleanly. For example, punctuation and spacing issues after transition words, such as missing spaces after commas ('Overall, the', 'Group of 11-15 years, has'), disrupt the smooth flow of the text. Referencing is generally clear, but grouping related information more systematically would enhance the logical progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic comparisons and trends using words such as 'inhabitants', 'exposure time', and 'category'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'exposure time to the internet' instead of 'time spent on the internet', and 'people who are in their 50,s' containing a punctuation error in the numeral. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary remains somewhat repetitive, relying on basic terms rather than precise academic synonyms. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a wider range of precise lexical items and demonstrate better control of collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including missing articles ('use internet' instead of 'use the internet'), awkward prepositional phrases ('having their age above 51'), and tense or agreement issues ('the age-group ranging 16 to 20 years, spend'). Punctuation is also unsteady, with unnecessary commas breaking up basic sentence structures. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their persistent presence prevents the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical control.
