Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and reporting the main features with accurate data from the table. The overview correctly highlights the downward trend across most age groups and notes the prominent peak in the 16-20 bracket. Key figures, such as the peak of 19 and 18 hours for males and females respectively, are reported accurately. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed; for example, the comparisons between genders could be more deeply integrated rather than just listed alongside each other. To reach the next band, the response would need to provide a more fully developed comparison throughout all age brackets, ensuring all key data points are contextualised with a higher level of analytical depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group information by age categories. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Then', and 'For both males and females', though some referencing and transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive ('For the age group...', 'For both males and females...'). To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences is smoother, avoiding repetitive phrasings at the start of paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the statistical information about internet usage. The writer makes several attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'drastically', 'surge', and 'bracket', which helps to describe the data effectively. However, there are noticeable word-form and spelling errors, such as 'incresed' instead of 'increased' and 'reduce' instead of 'reduced' in past tense contexts, along with slight awkwardness in phrasing like 'mean hours spent on Internet' instead of 'average hours spent on the internet'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response securely at this level. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and refine collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating an ability to handle different clause types. There are several error-free sentences, such as introductory and overview statements. However, some grammatical errors occur, particularly with verb tense consistency ('the number reduce back', 'the number decreased drastically'), prepositions ('spent on Internet' instead of 'on the internet'), and missing articles. These errors occur intermittently and rarely impede communication. To move to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex grammatical structures, ensure consistent tense usage when reporting past data, and eliminate minor errors related to articles and prepositions.
