Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the average time, in hours, people of Europe, both male and female, use on the internet of having different age groups.

Overall, teenagers spent most of their time on the internet as compared to other age group people. While this trend is very low in the people who are older. Almost every age of males shows dominance except for the age after thirty.

Both genders showed a sharp increase in the usage of the internet at the age between 16 and 20, 19 hours for boys and 18 hours for girls. Both age groups, 11-15 and 21-25, showed almost a same patteren. In this age group, males used the internet 2 hours more than females.

Furthermore, at the age of 26 to 30, both genders experienced the same amount of time they spent on online resources, which is 4 hours a day. On the other hand, the trend of using the internet falls in males after the age of 30. From the 31 to 50 age group, men used the internet for 3 hours, while women used it for 4 hours.

After the age of 51, females spent 3 hours, while males spent 2 hours on the internet, and it is the smallest amount of time they spent on the internet throughout their whole lifetime.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all main parts of the task by reporting the key features and making appropriate comparisons across the data. An overview is presented, noting the peak in internet usage among teenagers and the general decline among older age groups. However, some aspects of the response reflect the characteristics of a half-band, where certain ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, while the peak at age 16-20 and the subsequent decline are clearly stated, other comparisons—such as the similarity between the 11-15 and 21-25 groups—are slightly under-developed or lack sufficient contextualisation. Overall, the data is reported fairly accurately, though minor phrasing issues prevent it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical sequence of information, moving from an introductory overview into specific age group comparisons. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct points. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For example, transitional phrases like 'Furthermore' and 'On the other hand' are used, but referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'In this age group' following a mention of multiple age groups. Additionally, progression across sentences can feel slightly disjointed due to repetitive sentence starters, which keeps the response firmly at this level rather than achieving a more fluid organization.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is employed to complete the task successfully. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'dominance', 'experienced the same amount of time', and 'online resources'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'people of Europe, both male and female, use on the internet of having different age groups' and 'the trend of using the internet falls in males'. Spelling and word-form errors are generally absent or do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the intended meaning, which aligns well with the criteria for this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at structures like subordinate clauses ('While this trend is very low...'). However, there are notable errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include prepositional errors ('use on the internet', 'at the age between'), awkward phrasing ('people who are older', 'age group people'), and minor subject-verb agreement or article inconsistencies. While these errors are noticeable and prevent higher accuracy, they rarely impede communication, meaning the core message remains understandable throughout the response.
