Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by selecting the main features and making some relevant comparisons, but the length requirement is not met, as the response is three words short of the 150-word minimum (with ten words copied from the prompt left uncounted). The overview is basic, noting that the 16-20 age group spent the most hours and elders the least. However, the development of ideas is limited, and some data points are presented as a list rather than integrated into a fully coherent analytical summary. To reach a higher band, the response would need to meet the minimum word count and provide a more fully developed overview with deeper comparisons across all categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic logical organisation to the response, with paragraphs used to separate different age brackets. However, overall progression is limited, and the transitions between sentences feel somewhat mechanical and repetitive, such as the frequent repetition of phrases like 'spent most hours in internet' and 'by male and female'. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, leading to a choppy flow. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of referencing words and transitional phrases to connect ideas smoothly and establish a clearer, more natural progression of information throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, though it is minimally adequate to convey the basic data from the table. The writer frequently repeats terms like 'hours', 'spent', 'internet', 'male', and 'female'. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'young ages' instead of 'young people' and 'by both gender each'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the lack of range and precision restricts the score. To progress, the student must incorporate a broader range of vocabulary, including synonyms and less common items related to data reporting, and pay closer attention to natural word combinations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses and repetitive patterns. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in grammar, articles, and prepositions. Examples include missing articles ('spent most hours in internet'), awkward phrasing ('ages from 21 to 25 spent 7 hours by male'), and subject-verb agreement or preposition issues ('spent 4 hours in internet by both gender each'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures with a significantly higher proportion of error-free sentences.
