Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the age groups. An overview is provided, noting the peak age group of 16-20 and the lowest usage among those aged 51 and above, alongside gender trends. However, some aspects of the response are more fully developed than others, and certain details are slightly unclear or contain minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as phrasing like "people 11-15 spent an average hours online for males and 6 hours for females" which misses the number for males. These under-developed areas and minor omissions prevent the response from reaching a higher band, positioning it firmly within the expected level where relevant information is present but requires more precise expansion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the categories. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in awkward transitional phrases such as "To begin with", "After, the age group considerably declined", and "A smaller pattern can be seen the age group 51 above". Referencing and cohesive devices are occasionally inadequate or awkwardly managed, causing the flow of ideas to feel slightly disjointed at times. To move to a higher band, the student needs to ensure smoother transitions between sentences and more natural logical linking throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the main points of the table. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and comparative language, such as "considerably declined" and "proportion". However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and collocation issues, such as "recored the lowest ratio" instead of 'recorded the lowest figure', "more slightly time" instead of 'slightly more time', and "internet using proportion" instead of 'proportion of internet usage'. These errors and limited lexical flexibility occasionally impede smooth reading, placing the response at this specific band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. However, there is a limited range of grammatical structures used accurately, and attempts at more complex sentences frequently result in errors. Examples include missing verbs and prepositions, such as "aged people 16-20 spent most hours on internet", "male spent more slightly time on internet than females, the opposite was the true", and "female internet used slightly higher". These frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, articles, and prepositions can cause some difficulty for the reader, though they rarely obscure the overall meaning completely.
