Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the prompt and successfully identifies the main features and trends, such as the peak in internet usage among the 16-20 age group and the lowest usage among those aged 51 and over. Data from the table is cited correctly to support these points, including figures for both males and females across the various age brackets. However, the report tends to mechanically list the data row by row rather than fully extending the comparisons or grouping the information more insightfully. This prevents the response from achieving a higher level of task completion, as some of the supporting details feel somewhat repetitive in structure and underdeveloped in analytical depth. Overall, it satisfies the basic demands of the task by presenting the key information accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response exhibits an overall coherent arrangement, opening with an introductory paraphrase and a clear overview statement that captures the main trends. Information is organized into separate paragraphs for different age groups, which helps guide the reader through the data. However, the progression between sentences and paragraphs is occasionally mechanical, relying heavily on repetitive transition patterns like 'In the age group of...' and 'whereas the females spent...'. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is at times clumsy or repetitive. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logical flow of the body paragraphs lacks variety and sophistication, keeping the organizational structure at this intermediate level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data reporting such as 'average', 'spend', 'age group', and 'comparison'. There are attempts to use less common phrasing, but word choice is occasionally awkward, such as writing 'spent more time on internet' and 'male only spent' (missing articles and prepositions). Some lexical repetitions occur throughout the text, notably the continuous reuse of the verb 'spent'. While these vocabulary limitations and minor inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, they prevent the writing from demonstrating the precision and flexibility characteristic of higher band levels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic past and present reference structures. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('on internet' instead of 'on the internet') and awkward prepositional phrases ('In the age group of 21-25, the males spent...'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but sentence structures tend to be repetitive, and attempts at complex coordination occasionally result in clunky phrasing. These errors are frequent enough to cause some slight difficulty for the reader, but they rarely obscure the core meaning of the statistical information being reported.
