Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview of the main trends and reporting key data from the table. The writer correctly highlights that the 16 to 20 age group spent the highest number of hours on the internet, while older demographics recorded lower figures. Key comparisons between males and females are also included across multiple age brackets. However, the progression tends to over-generalise slightly in the categorization of categories like young adults and adulthood, and some data points are grouped rather than fully explored. To move towards a higher band, the response would need more precise selection and deeper extension of data points without relying heavily on a sequential listing of every row in the table.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression, beginning with an introduction and a summary overview, followed by body details structured by age groups. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'Consequently', and 'Additionally'. However, paragraphing is somewhat hindered by fragmented sentences, and transitions between sentences can feel slightly mechanical. Bridging the gap to the next level requires more seamless referencing and a smoother flow between adjacent sentences, ensuring that cohesive devices are integrated naturally rather than acting as isolated signposts.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends using terms such as 'proportion', 'decline', and 'utilization'. The writer also makes successful attempts at less common vocabulary, including 'plummates' and 'ordinary hours'. Nevertheless, there are lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'consume on internet' instead of 'spend on the internet', 'standard time' instead of 'average time', and 'ordinary hours of social media use' when the table measures general internet hours. Spelling and word form errors, such as 'make up' instead of 'makes up' and 'anf' instead of 'and', prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses and comparative structures. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with frequent errors occurring across basic and complex patterns. Notable issues include subject-verb agreement errors like 'teenagers ... shares a highest proportion', awkward prepositions in phrases such as 'trend of social media usage is peaked in age between', and article omissions or misuses like 'in age between' and 'for 21 to 25 years individuals'. Punctuation errors and missing verbs also appear. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally exert effort, which reflects the characteristics of this grammatical band.
