Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response partially addresses the task by reporting the main features of the table, such as the highest usage among the 16-20 age group and the lowest among older adults. However, the selection of data is somewhat mechanical, and the student includes irrelevant, subjective commentary, such as claiming that 8 hours of internet usage is 'dangerous for their mental and physical health,' which goes beyond reporting factual data. While an overview is attempted in the second paragraph, the overall presentation lacks a fully developed comparative analysis across all categories. To move to a higher level, the student should ensure all reported data remains strictly objective, avoid personal opinions or medical warnings, and provide a clearer, more synthesised overview of the overarching trends visible in the data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some organisation with basic paragraphing used to group age categories, but there is a lack of clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively throughout the text, such as the recurring phrase 'spend X hours by male and Y hours by female,' which results in a stilted structure. Referencing and linking between sentences are occasionally clumsy, making the flow disjointed. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to use a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices to connect ideas smoothly and ensure that the progression of information feels logical and cohesive rather than listing data points in a formulaic pattern.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on repetitive phrasing, such as 'average time spent,' 'spend X hours,' and 'people of age.' There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word formations, such as 'youngs' instead of 'young people' or 'young adults,' and spelling mistakes like 'thier' instead of 'their.' Attempts at less common vocabulary are absent. To improve in this area, the student should incorporate a broader range of synonyms and paraphrasing structures to describe statistical data, eliminate spelling errors, and use precise collocations related to data reporting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple statements. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty or awkward, such as in the opening sentence: 'The given table illustrates the information about average time spent on internet by male and female of Europe...' There are frequent grammatical errors involving missing articles ('on internet' instead of 'on the internet'), preposition misuse, and awkward subject-verb agreement or clause structures. To reach the next band, the student must produce a greater variety of error-free complex sentences, paying closer attention to articles, prepositions, and structural control.
