Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided table illustrates data regarding the typical hours invested by various age groups of European nationals on the internet.

It is mainly observed that from the time of teenage to mid twenties, males are spending thier time more on the internet. But in later thirties to an older age, females are seen dominating in these numbers. The overall numbers of average hours are seen declining with the growing age.

The data describes that in the age between 11 and 15, males are spending 8 hours while females are spending 8 hours per day on internet consumption, which is not much of a difference. But from the age of 16 till 20, the numbers boost to 19 and 18 hours for males and female respectively. Then from early to mid tewnties

men are at 7 hours and women at 5 hours.

Later twenties to just start of thirties, both male and female are seen allocating 4 hours of their day on the internet. From here on, female's internet consumption exceed male but in lesser numbers. From thirties to at the age of fifty, men spent 3 hours and women spent 4 hours on average, and from fifty onwards, the data goes to 2 and 3 hours respectively for male and female.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern: internet use peaks among 16–20-year-olds and generally falls in older groups, with women recording slightly higher figures in the older categories. You also report most age-group comparisons, so the response addresses the task. However, one important figure is inaccurate: for ages 11–15, the table gives 8 hours for males and 6 for females, not 8 for both. The overview’s claim that males spend more time from the teenage years to the mid-twenties is also too broad, since females are higher in the 11–15 group. Make the overview more precise and check each figure against the table; this would make the relevant information clearer and more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details in age-group order. This makes the broad progression easy to follow, and transitions such as “Then” and “From here on” help connect comparisons. However, the overview and detail paragraphs repeat the same general decline, while some links are imprecise: “From here on” does not clearly identify which age groups are being compared. The final paragraph also combines several age ranges and figures in a long sequence. Grouping the peak and younger groups together, then the older groups, and using clearer references to each age band would create more controlled progression and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing the table, including “declining,” “boost,” “allocating,” and “consumption.” These choices show an attempt to vary language rather than repeat “hours” throughout. Some expressions, however, are unnatural or imprecise for a data report: “males are spending thier time more,” “females are seen dominating,” and “the data goes to 2 and 3 hours” do not describe the figures naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “thier” and “tewnties,” and “nationals” is less suitable than a neutral reference to people. Prefer precise reporting verbs and standard collocations, such as “recorded,” “spent,” and “the figures fell to.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including comparisons and time clauses, and the main meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in agreement and verb forms. For example, “female's internet consumption exceed male” needs a plural subject or a singular verb with a complete comparison, while “men spent 3 hours and women spent 4 hours” shifts into the past despite describing table data. The phrase “from the age of 16 till 20” is also awkwardly formed, and “in the age between 11 and 15” uses an incorrect pattern. Use consistent present tense for table descriptions and check subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries. These corrections would make the varied structures more accurate.
