Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of six different age groups.

Overall, it is clear that time spent on internet was the most popular in the age group of 16-20 for both males and females, while usage of internet decreased among older age groups. Males spent more time on interent in most age groups.

To begin with, males spent an average of 8 hours online, compared to 6 hours for females in the age group of 11-15. Internet usage increased sharply in the age group of 16-20, reaching 19 hours for males and 18 hours for females. However, usage fell considerably among those aged 21–25, to 7 hours for males and 5 hours for females.

Turning to the remaining data, people aged 26-30 spent an equal amount of time online, at 4 hours for both males and females. Among people aged 31-50, females spent slightly more time on internet at 4 hours, compared to 3 hours for males. A similar pattern is seen for people aged 51+ where males spent 2 hours and females spent 3 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response selects the main features accurately: the 16–20 group records the highest figures for both sexes, and internet use generally declines in the older groups. It also reports the key comparisons correctly, including the equal four hours at ages 26–30 and the female lead in the two oldest categories. The overview is clear and the figures support it. To make the summary more fully developed, describe the overall pattern with greater precision: usage does not simply decrease among older groups, since it rises from ages 11–15 to its peak at 16–20 before falling. The statement that males spend more time in “most age groups” is accurate, but could acknowledge the two groups where females lead and the one where the figures are equal.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by the younger groups and then the remaining data. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish the main trend from the detailed comparisons, and transitions such as “To begin with” and “Turning to the remaining data” make the progression easy to follow. This is coherent overall, though some linking is formulaic and the repeated use of “age group” and “spent” makes the account feel less flexible. The overview’s broad claim that usage decreased among older groups could also be linked more explicitly to the peak at 16–20. Use a wider range of concise comparisons and references to connect related figures without relying on repeated transition phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Vocabulary is adequate for describing the table, and phrases such as “increased sharply,” “fell considerably,” and “slightly more” communicate changes and comparisons clearly. However, the range is somewhat repetitive: “spent,” “usage,” and “age group” recur, and “time spent on internet” is an awkward collocation. There are also spelling errors in “interent” and “internet” is inconsistently capitalised, although the meaning remains clear. More precise expressions would help distinguish hours of use from popularity; for example, the internet is not itself “the most popular” in a particular age group. Aim for accurate collocations and varied terms such as “average online time,” “recorded,” and “declined.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response uses a useful mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause (“while usage of internet decreased”) and comparison patterns such as “compared to 6 hours.” Most sentences are clear and several are error-free, showing good control of basic sentence construction and punctuation. A few grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “time spent on internet,” the article is missing; “on the internet” is the standard form. The phrase “the most popular in the age group” also creates an unclear grammatical relationship between time and popularity. In “where males spent 2 hours and females spent 3 hours,” the relative clause is understandable but could be more precisely attached to the age group. Continue using varied structures while checking articles and clause references.
