Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given table depicts the information about the average hours spent on social media by European people of distinct age groups.

To begin with, there was 8 male and 6 female in a range between 11 to 10 years old while age of 16 to 20 had the highest time spending on internet where male was 19 and female was 18. Furthermore, 7 male and 5 female reported in a range of 21 to 25.

On the other side, age between 26 and 30 shared the equal distribution of male and female, which was 4 while 3 male and 4 female recorded in a year between 31 and 50 whereas lowest figure reported in above 50 where 2 male and 3 female registered in above 51 age group.

In conclusion, age group of 16 to 20 showed the highest figure that they spent on internet in both gender whereas age above 51 showed the lowest figure in both gender

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group has the highest figures for both sexes, while the 51+ group has the lowest, and you report most of the table’s values. However, the opening description calls the subject “social media,” although the table concerns Internet use, and “11 to 10 years old” misstates the 11–15 age range. The response also gives little overall comparison beyond the highest and lowest groups; for example, it could highlight that male figures exceed female figures in most groups, with equality at 26–30 and a reversal at 31–50 and 51+. These inaccuracies and the limited overview leave some key features unclear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two paragraphs covering the age groups, and a concluding summary. The sequence broadly follows the table, and phrases such as “Furthermore” and “On the other side” signal movement between groups. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, and the second paragraph combines several comparisons in a long sentence, making the figures harder to follow. “On the other side” does not express a clear contrast here, while the conclusion repeats the highest and lowest points rather than adding a useful synthesis. Grouping the younger and older age ranges more deliberately and using clearer links between comparisons would make the organisation more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “highest,” “lowest,” “equal distribution,” and “recorded.” This gives you a workable range for the task, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes make the meaning less clear. “Social media” changes the subject from Internet use, and “time spending” is not a natural collocation; “hours spent online” would be clearer. Phrases such as “reported in a range” and “registered in above 51 age group” also do not describe table values naturally. Aim for precise, conventional language such as “the figure for males” and “people aged 51 and over,” rather than forcing formal-sounding expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, errors in agreement, articles, age-range phrasing, and punctuation are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “there was 8 male and 6 female” should use plural forms and a suitable construction, while “age of 16 to 20 had the highest time spending” lacks a clear grammatical subject and contains an awkward structure. The sentence beginning “whereas 3 male and 4 female recorded” also needs a clearer subject and verb pattern. Commas are sometimes missing after introductory phrases, as in “In conclusion, age group.” Practise accurate comparison sentences with consistent plural forms and complete clauses.
