IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The table compares the average time that males and females in six age groups in Europe spent on the internet
Overall, for both genders, internet consumption peaked at 16-20, it then declined steadily with age. At the early years the males used the internet more than the female, but beyond age 30, the females used more internet than the male.
The average time used by the male gender rose sharply from 8 hours among 11 to 15 years to a peak of 19 hours in 16-20 years, the highest among both genders. It then fell sharply to 7 hours among the 21-25 years. The numbers declined gradually and by age 51 and above only 2 hours was used on the internet.
Females followed a similar pattern starting with 6 hours among the 11-15 years, a little lower than that of the male to a peak of 18 hours among the 16-20 years. It is then followed by a sharp fall of 5 hours among the 21-25. Then 4 hour among 26-30 which equates with the male gender. This value which was maintained till 50 years and by 51+ years only 3 hours was spent. From age 31 and above, female used more time on the internet compared to male.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers the main features accurately and gives a clear overview: both genders reach their highest internet use at ages 16–20, followed by a decline, and the female figures exceed the male figures in the older groups. The key values are reported correctly, including the male peak of 19 hours and the female peak of 18. The comparison that females use more from age 31 onward is also supported by the table, while the equal figures at 26–30 are noted. This is a well-developed summary with relevant comparisons. To make the account even more precise, avoid saying use “declined steadily with age”: the figures fall overall after the peak, but there is a small female increase from 26–30 to 31–50.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing male and female figures. This gives the reader a clear route through the information, and sequencing within each gender paragraph is generally chronological. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “It then,” and “From age 31 and above” help connect the comparisons. Some cohesion is less smooth because several sentences begin with “Then” or “It,” and the reference in “This value which was maintained till 50 years” takes effort to interpret. The overview also says the decline is steady, although the female figure rises slightly in the 31–50 group. More varied transitions and clearer references would make the progression more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is enough vocabulary to describe the table and its trends, including “peaked,” “rose sharply,” “fell sharply,” and “declined gradually.” These choices communicate the main changes clearly, and the response uses relevant terms such as “average time” and “age groups.” However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “internet consumption,” “the male gender,” and “a sharp fall of 5 hours,” which could suggest a five-hour decrease rather than a value of five hours. Repetition of “hours” and “used” also limits flexibility. More precise collocations for time spent online and clearer wording for values versus changes would strengthen the range and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview’s contrast between age groups and the longer descriptions of changes over time. Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. For example, “the females used more internet than the male” has inconsistent plural forms, while “Then 4 hour among 26-30” is a sentence fragment and needs a finite verb. In “It is then followed by a sharp fall,” the passive construction is not well formed for describing the trend. There are also missing or inconsistent articles and plural endings. Aim to make each data point part of a complete sentence and check agreement and tense consistency.
