Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table shows the gender distrubution of European people spending mean time online across a range of distinct age groups.

Overall, it is evident that the teenagers comparatively gave more time to the internet than the other age levels. Additionally, the table also depicts that males outnumbered females in young age stages, whereas the situation is reversed in the middle-age and old-age people.

In the younger age groups roughly from 11 to 25, men were seen more interested in online activities than women. Although gender gap is not much particularly in teenagers, males still dominated females in the earlier stages such as in children and in youngsters.

In the age groups beyong youngsters, women predominately spent more time online than men.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the broad pattern that internet use is highest among teenagers and that women spend more time online in some older groups. However, the response reports almost none of the table’s figures and gives an inaccurate comparison: males exceed females only in the 11–15, 16–20 and 21–25 groups, while the sexes are equal at 26–30; women are higher at 31–50 and 51+. The claim that males dominated “in children and in youngsters” is vague, and the overview does not clearly state the peak or the overall decline with age. The response also falls 29 words short of the required minimum. Include key figures and make the age-group comparisons precise to develop the summary more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing age-related comparisons. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and transitions such as “Overall” and “Additionally” signal the overview. However, the final two paragraphs repeat the same broad contrast between younger males and older females rather than progressing through the data in a clear sequence. Phrases such as “In the younger age groups” and “beyond youngsters” do not identify the relevant age bands precisely, so the links between claims and table categories are unclear. Organise the details by age range and use specific references to connect each comparison to the figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “age groups,” “gender gap,” “dominated” and “spent more time online,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “distinct age groups,” but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “gender distribution” does not describe the table as precisely as average online hours by sex, and “gave more time to the internet” is an awkward collocation. “Age levels” and “middle-age and old-age people” are also imprecise for these categories. The spelling errors “distrubution” and “beyong” further reduce control. Prefer straightforward, accurate terms such as “average hours online” and name the age bands directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You show a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “whereas” and a concessive clause beginning “Although.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your main point. Some grammatical patterns are less controlled, however. In “Although gender gap is not much,” the article and construction are faulty; a clearer form would be “Although the gender gap is small.” The phrase “males still dominated females” also lacks a clear comparison of hours, while “women predominately spent” uses an awkward adverb form in this context. Continue using complex sentences, but check articles, natural clause construction and whether each sentence clearly expresses the comparison.
