Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The give table represents the average time spent on internet by European people of different age groups.

At the first glance it is evident that age group of 16 to 20 in both men and women has the highest average screen time as compared to other age groups. But in male is more than the female about an hour. On the second hand the least screen time is seen in the age group of 51+.

Moving forward towards the remaining information, screen time of females is less than by 2 hours in comparison of males in the age group of 11-15. Time spending on internet of age group 26-30 is same in both the genders.

Overall, the most screen time is recorded in case of male category .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify two important features: the 16–20 group has the highest figures for both sexes, and the 51+ group has the lowest. You also report the equal value for men and women aged 26–30. However, the response covers the table only partially: it omits several useful comparisons, including the 21–25 and 31–50 figures, and the overview claim that males have the most screen time overall is not established by the table. The 16–20 difference is one hour, not simply an unspecified amount, while the 11–15 difference is correctly given as two hours. The response is 30 words below the required minimum, which limits the detail and development of the summary. Include more key figures and a clearer overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to broad observations and then to selected comparisons. This makes the main points reasonably easy to locate. However, progression is limited: the final paragraph repeats the idea that males record the most time rather than adding a new comparison or concluding overview. Linking phrases such as “At the first glance,” “On the second hand,” and “Moving forward” are either awkward or do not clearly express the relationship between the points. The comparisons also feel disconnected because most age groups are not covered. Organise the body around the main pattern—high figures among younger people and lower figures among older groups—and use straightforward links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the table, including “average,” “age group,” “highest,” “least,” and “in comparison.” These choices make the topic understandable, but the range is limited and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “screen time” for time spent on the Internet and “Time spending on internet.” “On the second hand” is also an inaccurate expression, and “male category” sounds vague in this context. Repetition of “screen time” and “age group” further restricts the range. Aim for precise, natural report language, for example “hours spent online,” “the figure for women,” and “the lowest average.” Check collocations and use consistent terms for the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates its main observations using mostly short, simple sentences, with a few attempts at more complex structures. However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors recur. For example, “The give table represents” has an incorrect verb form, while “But in male is more than the female about an hour” lacks a clear grammatical structure. In “screen time of females is less than by 2 hours,” the comparison pattern is faulty, and “Time spending on internet … is same” has problems with the clause structure and article use. The final sentence also has an unnecessary space before the full stop. Practise complete comparison structures, such as “Men spent one hour more than women,” and check articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries before submitting.
