Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart presents information about the average hours spent on the internet by European people of different age groups.

16-20 age groups had the biggest number of hours consumed on the internet with total number of 28 people for both genders, though male edged female with one number. On the other hand, the age groups between 11-15 and 21 -25 came second and third at 14 and 12 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the main peak and low point, and most reported figures match the table: the 16–20 group has the highest combined total, while the 51+ group has the lowest. However, the overview that hours declined as age increased is too broad: usage rises sharply from ages 11–15 to 16–20 before falling, and the 31–50 group also has more female than male hours. Some comparisons are unclear, including “28 people,” which should be presented as hours, not people. The response also contains 139 words, below the 150-word minimum. To address the task more fully, give a precise overview of the peak and subsequent decline, and compare the gender figures across the age groups.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing figures. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is limited because the overview’s claim of a general decline is not fully accurate, and the body paragraphs do not consistently group or compare the data. “Furthermore” does not clearly connect the two overview points, while “On the other hand” introduces a comparison that is not really a contrast. The final paragraph also moves between the oldest group and two middle groups without a clear organising principle. Group the peak and the decline together, then describe the lower age-group figures and gender differences; use linking phrases only where their relationship is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary such as “age groups,” “average hours,” and “genders,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or repetitive. “Number of hours consumed” and “number of people” do not accurately describe the table’s hours, while “edged female with one number” is an awkward way to report a one-hour difference. There are also spelling errors, including “innternet” and “peope.” Choose precise terms for the measure and vary the language used to describe values and comparisons. Proofreading spelling and collocations would make the report clearer and more appropriate for an academic summary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences, including the overview and the sentence beginning “Female had equal number,” but the range remains limited and errors occur frequently enough to affect fluency. For example, “the last two age groups has” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “16-20 age groups had” needs a clearer singular subject or plural construction. Articles and number forms are also missing in “Female had equal number of peope at 4 each.” The sentence joined by “furthermore” needs more controlled punctuation and sentence structure. Practise accurate comparisons using patterns such as “the figure for men was…” and “women spent…”, and check agreement, articles, and plural forms before submitting.
