IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table chart showcase the number of average hours spent by male and female individuals on the internet in the Europe on the basis of varied age groups. Overall, it is readily apparent that the time passed on the internet by both men and women is at apex in the age group of 16-20, gradual rise followed by the latter age range of 11-15 and the least internet usage by the people belonging to the age over 51 years.
Additionally, it can be depicted that in comparison to men, the utilization of internet facility has trimmed down by certain numbers in all the specified age groups. However, there is almost equivalent application of internet services by both the genders in the age range of 26-30 years.
Moreover, it can be observed that people in the ages of 21-50 slowly decline their hourly application of internet facility as they grow older and wiser.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main peak for both sexes in the 16–20 group and the lowest usage among people aged 51+, and you note the equal figures for men and women aged 26–30. However, the overview is not fully accurate: usage does not rise gradually into the 16–20 group, since the 11–15 figures are lower, and the claim that women’s usage is lower in all age groups overlooks the 31–50 and 51+ groups, where women spend more time online. The statement about a decline from 21 to 50 is also too broad and does not report the actual pattern clearly. Include key figures and compare the age groups more precisely so that the main features are fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an opening description, an overview, and further comparisons. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Additionally,” and “Moreover” help signal these stages. However, the progression between points is not always clear. The second paragraph makes a general comparison by gender, while the final paragraph returns to age trends without explaining how its claim relates to the earlier overview. Some references, such as “certain numbers” and “their hourly application,” are vague, and the repeated use of “internet facility” makes the connections feel mechanical. Organise the body around clear comparisons—first the age pattern, then differences between males and females—and use specific figures to make each point connect logically.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonably varied vocabulary and attempt more formal expressions, including “readily apparent,” “utilization,” and “equivalent.” The meaning is generally understandable, but several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing a table. “The table chart showcase” combines two labels and uses an unsuitable verb, while “time passed on the internet” and “application of internet facility” are awkward collocations. “Trimmed down” is also informal and does not clearly describe the figures. Aim for accurate, conventional data-reporting language rather than elaborate phrasing: for example, say that hours “were highest” or “declined,” and refer to “internet use.” This would make your adequate range more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer sentences with clauses such as “as they grow older,” and most of your meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors are present, however. In the opening, “The table chart showcase” has a subject–verb agreement problem; “in the Europe” uses an unnecessary article; and “at apex” is missing an article. The overview phrase “gradual rise followed by the latter age range” is also structurally unclear, making the relationship between the age groups difficult to follow. Check agreement, articles, and sentence construction, especially when combining several ideas. Shorter, well-controlled comparisons would help you retain variety while improving accuracy.
