IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table compares data on the average hours spent by European male and female on the internet from six different age groups.
Overall, it is apparent that age group 16-20 accounted for the lagest numbers in both genders, while group 51+ spent less time on the internet. Additionally, equal number of users spent time from age 26 to 30.
The maximum average hours spent by males between 16 and 20, at 19 and followed by females at 18. Meanwhile, the figure for category 11-15 was 8 hours from men and 6 from women. The same number of hours were spent from age group 26-30, at 4.
In contrast, people above 51 showed less interest in using internet, with male spending 2 and female 3 hours. From 31 to 50, female (4) spent an additional hour than male (3), whereas male spent 7 hours than female (5) group from 21 to 25.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group has the highest figures for both sexes, while the 51+ group has the lowest, and you report the equal figures for ages 26–30. The comparisons for the other age bands are also factually correct. This gives the response a clear overview and covers the table’s key information. To make the summary more complete and precise, describe the overall pattern across the age groups—for example, that figures generally fall after the 16–20 peak—and clarify that the table reports average hours, rather than numbers of users. Some details are listed without being integrated into a broader comparison, so the main features are not yet developed consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting the figures. The contrast marker “In contrast” helps signal the move to the older age groups, and the information is generally easy to follow. However, some connections between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “The maximum average hours spent by males between 16 and 20” is a sentence fragment, and “whereas male spent 7 hours than female (5) group” makes the comparison difficult to process. Grouping the figures into a clearer progression—peak, decline among younger adults, then lowest values among older adults—would strengthen the flow. Use complete comparison sentences and clearer references to age groups.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “average hours,” “maximum,” “figure,” and “in contrast,” so the meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is somewhat repetitive, with “spent” and “group” used frequently, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate. “Accounted for the largest numbers” does not describe hours naturally, while “spent less interest” is not an appropriate expression for the figures. There is also a spelling error in “lagest.” Aim for precise reporting language such as “recorded,” “stood at,” and “the figure for,” and distinguish hours of internet use from the number of users.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sentence beginning “while” and a comparison using “whereas.” Most of the data can still be understood, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. “The maximum average hours spent by males between 16 and 20” is not a complete sentence because it lacks a main verb. In “European male and female,” the plural nouns are needed, and “with male spending 2” needs an article or plural form. The final comparison also has an incomplete structure: “male spent 7 hours than female (5) group.” Practise complete clauses and parallel comparisons, for example, “Males recorded 7 hours, compared with 5 for females.”
