IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The table shows a comparision of average hours spent on the internet by European people of different age groups which are divided into six rows.
Overall, the table starts from the 11-15 age group and cocludes at the 51+ age group for both genders. The highest screen time reported is of 16-20 age group in the both genders respectively that is 19 hours for male and 18 hours for female and the least screen noticed is of age group 51+ that comes out to be 2 hours for male and 3 hours for female.
In the initial age group 11-15 shows slightly increase in the hours contrasting to age group of 21-25 and from the fourth coloumn there is a steady decrease expcept for the female category of age group 26-30 and 31-50 which stayed same at 4 hours.
Finally we can conclude that European people of age group 11-20 spent the maximum time on the internet comapred to people of 21-51+ ages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: internet use peaks among 16–20-year-olds (19 hours for males and 18 for females) and is lowest among people aged 51+ (2 and 3 hours). You also note that the figures generally fall in older groups. However, the overview is incomplete and some comparisons are unclear. For example, “the initial age group 11-15 shows slightly increase” does not specify the comparison clearly, and the claim that the 26–30 and 31–50 female figures “stayed same” overlooks that the table shows 4 hours in both groups but does not describe the wider pattern precisely. Include the equal figures for ages 26–30 and the small female advantage at 31–50 to make the key features more fully reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two further paragraphs, and the reader can follow the broad age-related pattern. However, progression is limited: the final paragraph repeats the overview rather than adding a useful comparison, while the third paragraph combines several age groups without clearly explaining how they relate. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In the initial age group” and “Finally” are used, but some do not create a clear logical connection; “Finally we can conclude” is especially repetitive after the overview. Organise the details into a clearer comparison of the peak group, the younger and middle groups, and the older groups, using precise references to the age bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “average hours,” “age group,” “highest” and “steady decrease,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are awkward, such as “screen time reported,” “least screen noticed” and “in the both genders.” Repetition of “age group” and “hours” also makes the description less flexible. Spelling errors, including “comparision,” “cocludes,” “coloumn” and “comapred,” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, conventional data-reporting language—for example, “the lowest figures were recorded among people aged 51 and over”—and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For instance, “In the initial age group 11-15 shows slightly increase” lacks a clear grammatical subject and has an incorrect verb pattern; “the highest screen time … is of 16-20 age group in the both genders” also has problems with articles and sentence construction. The sentence beginning “from the fourth coloumn” is not smoothly connected to its opening clause. Use complete, direct structures such as “For males, the figure rises from 8 hours among 11–15-year-olds to 19 hours among 16–20-year-olds.” Practise accurate comparisons and vary sentence forms while keeping each sentence controlled.
