Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table illustrates the information of usage of internet by different age groups in Europe.

Overall, in early ages men and women spent most of their hours on internet whereas with the growing age it decreased rapidly.

In terms of early ages like 11-15 only 8 hours were spent on internet while women spent only 6 hours.

Furthermore, in teenage it increased dramatically and reached to 19 hours in men and 18 hours in women. With the growing age it can be seen the usage of internet in men and women become less and from age 21-30 it falls from 7 to 4 hours and 5 to 4 hrs respectively.

On the other hand internet usage in the age group of 31-50 of men spent only 3 hrs and women spent 4 hours on internet while 51+ age group of men and women only spent 2 and 3 hrs on internet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad pattern accurately: internet use peaks among 16–20-year-olds and is lower in the older groups, and the figures you give for the age bands are generally consistent with the table. However, the overview is imprecise: “in early ages” does not clearly identify the 16–20 group as the peak, and the claim that use “decreased rapidly” overlooks the smaller differences among the oldest groups. Some comparisons are also unclear, particularly “from age 21–30 it falls from 7 to 4 hours,” which combines two age bands rather than explaining them separately. To make the summary more complete, state the peak and overall decline clearly, then compare the male and female figures across the age groups.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about younger and older age groups. This gives the reader a general route through the information. However, progression is not consistently clear: “Furthermore” introduces the peak, while “On the other hand” suggests a contrast that is not really being made. The paragraphing is also limited, and the final sentence combines two age groups and both sexes, making the comparisons harder to follow. Use separate, logically grouped paragraphs for the overview and key details, and connect comparisons directly—for example, contrast male and female figures within each age band rather than relying on broad transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary such as “increased dramatically,” “reached,” and “decreased,” which helps describe the main movement in the figures. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, especially repeated uses of “spent … hours on internet” and “with the growing age.” Some expressions are not natural for this context, such as “information of usage of internet” and “in teenage.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the general message, but they reduce precision and fluency. Aim for concise data-reporting language, including terms such as “internet use,” “hours spent online,” “rose to a peak,” and “declined with age.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer structures, including “whereas with the growing age it decreased rapidly,” but control is inconsistent and the range remains limited. Several sentences contain faulty or awkward grammatical patterns. For example, “in early ages men and women spent most of their hours” lacks a clear comparison, and “the usage of internet in men and women become less” has subject–verb agreement and sentence-structure problems. The final sentence, “internet usage in the age group of 31-50 of men spent,” also makes the subject unclear. Use straightforward sentence patterns accurately, check agreement and articles, and make the people or the usage—not an age group—the subject of each sentence.
