Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The following table illustrates the internet hours spent on an average by European people of different age groups.

Overall, it can be seen that most internet hours spent by both male and female is seen between the age of 16-20 years, whereas the least is spent by the people of 51+ years of age. Meanwhile, people between the age of 26-30 had balanced number of hours spent on internet.

Firstly, the males between the age of 11-15 had spent total 8 hours, 16-20 had the highest usage of internet that is 19 hours, the age group 21-25 had spent 7 hours, 26-30 had eqaul hours spent for both genders. The people of age groups 31-50 and 51+ had considerably low hours spent on the interent which is 3 and 2 hours consecutively.

The females at the age group of 11-15 has spent 6 hours, 16-20 spent 18 hours which is the highest, 21-25 had shown 5 hours of usage, 26-30 and 31-50 had same amount of hours spent on internet whichis 4 hours and the least was seen in the age groups of 51 + years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern accurately: both sexes record their highest Internet use at ages 16–20, and the 51+ group has the lowest figures. You also report most of the table values correctly and note the equal male and female figures for ages 26–30. This addresses the task, but some comparisons are less fully developed. For example, the overview could highlight that male figures exceed female figures in the younger groups, while females are slightly higher in the 31–50 and 51+ groups. The statement that ages 26–30 had “balanced” hours is relevant but could be expressed more precisely as equal usage at four hours each. A clearer overview of these contrasts would make the key features more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of male and female figures. This makes the information generally easy to follow. However, progression within the body paragraphs is somewhat mechanical: “Firstly” introduces the male figures, followed by a long sequence of age groups, and the female paragraph repeats much the same pattern. Some links between ideas are unclear, particularly “Meanwhile, people between the age of 26-30 had balanced number,” which does not clearly connect to the preceding overview. Grouping the figures by age range or directly comparing males and females within each range would create a more coherent progression. Use linking expressions selectively and make references such as “the least” explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the table, including “highest usage,” “least,” and “considerably low,” so the reader can understand the main comparisons. However, several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, especially repeated forms of “hours spent on internet” and “had spent.” Some collocations are unnatural, such as “balanced number of hours” and “same amount of hours”; “equal figures” or “the same number of hours” would be more idiomatic. Spelling errors, including “eqaul,” “interent,” and “whichis,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for a wider set of precise reporting expressions and check spelling carefully, while avoiding unnecessary repetition of “spent.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including an overview clause beginning “Overall, it can be seen that” and sentences that compare several age groups. The main information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “most internet hours spent by both male and female is seen” has problems with agreement and sentence construction; “the highest usage … that is 19 hours” also needs clearer clause structure and punctuation. There are inconsistent verb forms in “had spent” and “has spent,” and phrases such as “between the age of” need plural agreement when referring to groups. Break up the long lists into shorter, controlled sentences and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and tense consistency.
