IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This table shows the usage of internet by European males and females of different age groups where the usage of internet is higher in males of young ages relative to the females of the same ages while consumption of internet is more in elder females compared to the males of their ages.
If we see the details of the tables, it will be clear that the people of age between 11-20 spend most of their time on internet as compared to the people of other age groups.Males of age between 11-15 spend one third of the day on internet while females of the same age spend one fourth of the day.Teenagers of age 16-20 spend three fourth of the day on internet.
Males of the age 21 or older start using less internet where it reduces to approximately one third of the day in the males of 21-25 years old and males of the age 26-30 consume internet only for 4 hours which further reduces to 3 hours in males of 30-50 and it remanins only 2 hours in males older than 50.
Usage of internet in females from 21 to 25 years old is about 5 hours which lowers in the next age by one hour till fifty and afterward it remains only 3 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern: internet use is highest among 16–20-year-olds and generally declines in older groups, while females slightly exceed males in some older brackets. You also include several relevant figures. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: 11–15-year-old males spend 8 hours, not “one third of the day,” and females spend 6 hours, not “one fourth”; 16–20-year-olds record 19 and 18 hours, which is not “three fourth of the day.” The overview also says younger males use the internet more, but does not clearly summarise the peak and subsequent decline across both sexes. More precise reporting of the figures and a concise overview would make the key features clearer and more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a broadly logical sequence: it begins with a general comparison, then discusses younger users, male age groups, and finally female age groups. This gives the reader an overall route through the data. However, the organisation is not fully balanced, as the male figures receive more detailed treatment than the female figures, and the overview is combined with an imprecise comparison rather than clearly separated from the details. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “while” and “which,” and “If we see the details of the tables” is an awkward transition. Use a distinct overview paragraph, then group the detailed comparisons by age pattern or sex, with clearer links between the points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “age groups,” “compared to,” “reduces,” and “usage.” Meaning is generally understandable, but several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing a table. “Consumption of internet” and “consume internet” are not idiomatic; “internet use” or “time spent online” would be more natural. “People of age” and “males of young ages” are also awkward, while “remanins” is a spelling error. Repetition of “usage of internet” limits flexibility. Aim for accurate collocations and vary the wording naturally, rather than using formal-sounding expressions that do not fit the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer comparisons and clauses with “where” and “while,” and the main meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “the usage of internet” needs an article or a different construction, and “people of age between 11-20” is not a well-formed age expression. In “it reduces to approximately one third,” the pronoun reference is unclear, and the sentence would be clearer with a direct subject such as “male use falls.” There are also punctuation and spacing issues, including no space after the full stop before “Males.” Check articles, age-range phrasing, pronoun references, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
