Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table shows the hours spent on the Internet by male and female of six different European age groups.

Overall, the aged 16-20 spent more time on the Internet compared to the other five groups. Also, the two genders in aged 26-30 spent same number of hours on the Internet . However, aged 51+ spent less hours going through the Internet.

The female in the 31-50 age bracket spent four hours on the Internet while the male in this same age group spent only three hours. In addition to this, the female aged 51+ spent three hours using the Internet than the male, who spent just two hours on the net.

The aged 16-20 recorded the highest number of hours spent on internet use. With the male averaging nineteen hours on the net while the female used eighteen hours. Also, the male and female aged 11- 15 used eight and six hours on the Internet respectively. The male and female aged 26-30 spent equal number of four hours whereas the male spent 7 hours on the net while the fenale spent 5 hours on the net among the aged 21-25.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group records the highest figures for both sexes, while the 51+ group has the lowest, and you report the values for all six age bands correctly. The overview also notes the equal figures for ages 26–30. These points address the task and are supported by relevant data. However, the overview could compare the broader pattern more fully—for example, internet use rises sharply to a peak at 16–20 and then generally declines with age. Some details are presented without a clear synthesis, and the opening description does not specify that the figures are average hours. A more selective overview of the main trends would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information is generally understandable. However, progression is not consistently clear: the highest figures are mentioned in the overview and then repeated in the final paragraph, while the middle paragraphs focus on the older groups before returning to younger groups. This makes the comparison feel somewhat repetitive rather than systematically organised. Linking phrases such as “In addition to this” and “Also” are used, but they do not always clarify how the next point relates to the previous one. Grouping the figures by trend—peak, subsequent decline, and gender differences—would create a clearer progression and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough task-related vocabulary to communicate the comparisons, including “age bracket,” “averaging,” and “recorded the highest.” However, the range is somewhat repetitive, particularly with repeated uses of “spent,” “hours,” and “on the net.” Some expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “going through the Internet” and “spent three hours … than the male”; the latter also makes the comparison difficult to interpret. There is also a spelling error in “fenale.” More precise collocations for describing data and comparisons would improve clarity and flexibility. Aim to vary reporting verbs while keeping the wording natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple statements and some more developed structures, such as “while the male in this same age group spent only three hours.” Most of the intended comparisons remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “male and female” needs a plural or possessive form, “the aged 16-20 spent” is an awkward construction, and “spent same number” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “With the male averaging nineteen hours” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Punctuation is also inconsistent, including an unnecessary space before a full stop. Practise complete sentence structures and check articles, plurals and agreement when comparing groups.
