IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The table illustrates the data of European male and female of different age categories spending the average hours on the internet.
Overall, both male and female of same age groups have the highest and lowest number of hours spent on the internet. However, females spent less time as compared with males average time on the ineternet.
Looking at data, younger age group of 16 to 20 years have the highest number of hours spent on internet for both male and female at 19 hours and 18 hours respectively. In contrast, older age group reported the lowest number of hours for men spending 2 hours and for women 3 hours on average.
The teenage group of 11 to 15 years spent 8 hours for mal and 6 hours for female. The other adult groups of different age also spent average of about 7 to 4 hours . Only the age group of 26 to 30

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main peak and low point accurately: the 16–20 group records 19 hours for males and 18 for females, while the 51+ group records 2 and 3 hours. You also include the 11–15 figures. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: “both male and female of same age groups have the highest and lowest” does not clearly state the pattern, and the claim that females spent less time overall overlooks that women exceed men in the 31–50 and 51+ groups and match them at 26–30. The final sentence is unfinished, and the adult-group summary is too vague to show the comparisons across all categories. State the overall age pattern clearly and report the remaining figures selectively but precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to selected details, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal relationships. However, progression is limited: the overview repeats the idea of highest and lowest without explaining the full pattern, while the detail paragraph shifts from the peak to the oldest group and then back to teenagers. “The other adult groups” is not sufficiently specific, and the final sentence stops at “Only the age group of 26 to 30,” leaving the reader without a completed point. Organise the details in a consistent sequence, such as from youngest to oldest, and use clear links between comparisons so each paragraph develops a complete idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “age categories,” “average hours,” “highest,” and “lowest,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “illustrates the data of … spending the average hours” and “reported the lowest number of hours for men spending.” Repetition of “hours,” “age group,” and “spent” also makes the description less flexible. There are spelling errors in “ineternet” and “mal,” which reduce accuracy. Choose concise collocations such as “shows average internet use” and “recorded the fewest hours,” and use varied but precise terms for age bands and comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a few complex forms, including “Looking at data” and the contrast sentence beginning “However,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns, and errors occur frequently. For example, “European male and female” lacks appropriate plural forms, while “younger age group … have” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The phrase “both male and female of same age groups” also has missing articles and an unclear grammatical structure. In “The teenage group … spent 8 hours for mal,” the construction does not clearly express who recorded the figure. The final sentence is incomplete, and spacing before punctuation is inconsistent. Practise complete comparative sentences with accurate subjects and verbs, and check articles, plurals, agreement, and sentence endings.
