Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response selects and reports the key pattern accurately: internet use peaks among 16–20-year-olds for both sexes and is lowest among people aged 51+, with the figures for each age group correctly stated. The overview also identifies the broad age-related decline, and the comparisons between males and females are relevant. This gives the report a clear focus and supports its main points with data. To make the account more fully developed, draw out the gender pattern across the table: males record higher figures in the younger groups, the sexes are equal at 26–30, and females are higher in the two oldest groups. This would add a more analytical comparison rather than mainly listing values.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The report is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, then details moving through the age groups from youngest to oldest. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” “Then,” and “Finally” help readers follow this progression, and the figures are grouped logically. The main limitation is that the body paragraphs rely heavily on a list-like sequence of age groups, with limited comparison between them. For stronger progression, group the younger, higher-use categories together and contrast them with the older, lower-use categories, while using comparisons to connect the data. The paragraphing is clear, but more varied links between related figures would make cohesion less dependent on transition words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main information, using relevant terms such as “average,” “highest,” “lowest,” and “age group.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, including “average hour,” “highest number hours,” and “spent on by males.” Repeated use of “spent” and “group” also makes the report sound repetitive. Choose more precise collocations for describing the table, such as “average hours of internet use” and “recorded,” and use “figure” or “amount of time” where appropriate. These changes would improve naturalness and precision while retaining the clear, task-relevant vocabulary already present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mixture of sentence forms, including an overview sentence and several clauses that report comparisons, so the main meaning is generally recoverable. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and some sentence patterns are incomplete or faulty. For example, “The second highest time spent by 11-15 year age group” lacks a main verb, while “There were average 19 hours spent on by males” has problems with article use and sentence construction. In “4 hours each by males and females were spent,” the opening phrase is awkwardly positioned. Practise complete subject–verb structures and accurate articles, prepositions, and plural forms. More reliable control of these basic patterns would make the data easier to read.
