Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table below illustrates the data of European people of certain age groups on how much time they spend on surfing the internet.

Overall, people who fall in the 16-year to 20-year age groups spend more of their time using the internet. While people who are older than 51 spend the least time on the internet.

Firstly, the kids who were between 11 and 15 years old were using the internet for 8 hours by boys and 6 hours by girls. However, teenage people from the 16-20-year-old age group spend an average of 19 hours by males and 18 hours by females. The use of the internet became significantly lower for 21- to 25-year-old people than for previous age groups, with 7 and 5 hours on average by both genders, respectively. The two age groups are 26 to 30 and 31 to 50, who used the internet on average 4 hours for both men and women for the first group and 3 hours for the men and 4 hours for the females for the other group. The least internet users were people who were 51 years old and older than that.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group records the highest figures, while people aged 51 and over have the lowest, and you report most of the table’s values correctly. The comparison between the sharp fall after ages 16–20 and the lower figures in older groups is relevant. This meets the task well, though some details are less fully reported: the final group’s male and female figures (2 and 3 hours) are omitted, and the overview could more clearly note that men spend more time in most younger groups, while women are slightly ahead in the two oldest groups. A more complete overview and precise comparisons would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement, with an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph that moves through the age groups in order. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Firstly,” and “However” help signal the stages of the description. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “The two age groups are 26 to 30 and 31 to 50” does not smoothly introduce the figures, and “with 7 and 5 hours … by both genders, respectively” makes the relationship between the numbers and genders harder to follow. The final age group is mentioned only in a brief closing sentence, rather than being integrated with its figures. Clearer grouping and more precise referencing would make the progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the table, including “average,” “significantly lower,” and “least,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary expressions for internet use. However, some choices are unnatural or imprecise for a formal data summary: “the data of … people,” “surfing the internet,” and “internet users” do not consistently describe hours spent online. “Kids” is also too informal for this report, while “teenage people” is an awkward phrase. Repeated use of “spend” and “use” limits flexibility. More precise collocations such as “average time spent online” and “recorded” would improve the academic tone and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “people who fall in the 16-year to 20-year age groups” and a comparison introduced by “than.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. The overview’s “While people who are older than 51 spend the least time” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence. In “were using the internet for 8 hours by boys,” the passive construction and preposition do not express the intended meaning clearly. The long sentence beginning “The two age groups are…” also has an unclear structure. Aim for complete sentences and use consistent present-tense forms when describing the table.
