Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main peak accurately: people aged 16–20 have the highest figures for both sexes, and the 51+ group has the lowest. You also include several relevant comparisons, such as the male figure of 8 hours at ages 11–15 and the female figure of 5 at ages 21–25. However, coverage is partial: the response omits the 51+ figures and the female 11–15 figure, and it does not clearly summarise the overall decline after the 16–20 peak. The claim that men and women spend a similar amount online in “most” age groups is broad and not fully supported by the figures. The response is 147 words, three words below the required minimum; develop the overview and include the missing comparisons to meet the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs discussing male and female figures. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is uneven: the male paragraph jumps from ages 16–20 to 26–30, leaving out the 21–25 group, and the final paragraph ends without covering the oldest age group. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Additionally” are repeated and sometimes do not show a clear relationship between the points. The sentence beginning “Whereas” is also detached from the preceding sentence, making the connection less smooth. Grouping the age bands in order and using comparisons to link the sexes would create clearer progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “average number of hours,” “age group,” “highest figure” and “decline.” There is also some variation in how you describe changes, such as “rise considerably” and “fall sharply.” However, the range is limited and several choices or combinations sound unnatural, including “spend most time,” “records the highest figure” and “spend equal hours.” Repetition of “on the internet” also makes the description less concise. Aim for precise, natural collocations used in data reporting, and vary references to the figures without sacrificing clarity. These improvements would make the comparisons more fluent and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and more complex comparisons, and the reader can generally understand the intended figures. However, errors occur frequently enough to limit accuracy. For example, “the figure rise considerably” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, while “the age group of 26–30 spend” uses a singular subject with a plural verb. The construction “Whereas, the figure fall sharply” also has an incorrect verb form and is not a complete sentence in this context. Articles and sentence boundaries are inconsistent, as in “Overview, the table shows” and the standalone “Whereas” clauses. Practise building complete comparison sentences with accurate agreement and verb forms, and check punctuation and spacing when proofreading.
