IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given table illustrates the information about the average time spent on the internet by European people of different age groups. The data is categorized into two types (e.g,. Male and female).
Overall, males accounted for the highest in 16-20 age group, whereas 51+ age group recorded the lowest. However, the age group of 16-20 females recorded almost the same hours as males and the lowest is 51+.
In the 16-20 the male age group recorded 19 hours which was higher than all other groups. 11-15 males stood at 8 followed by the 21-25 with 7. 26-30 age group occupied the next position, registering 4 hours whereas, the figure for the 31-50 age group stood at 3 hours . By contrast, 51+ registered only 2 hours, which was the lowest figure.
The female age group recorded approximately same as the male group. In the 16-20 age the female recorded at 18 hours which is in the first position. Age group of 11-15 stood at 8 which was the second highest followed by the 21-25 age group recorded 7 hours on the internet. 26-30 and 31-50 both occupied the next position, registering at 4. 51+ age group was the lowest category at just 2 hours the lowest figure recorded.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern: both sexes reach their highest Internet use in the 16–20 group, and the 51+ group is lowest. You also include several relevant figures and make comparisons between age groups. However, some data are misreported: females aged 11–15 recorded 6 hours, not 8, and females aged 21–25 recorded 5, not 7; the 51+ female figure is 3, not 2. The overview also says the 51+ group is lowest without distinguishing the male and female figures. These inaccuracies and the limited comparison of the small differences between sexes mean that some features are covered less fully than others. Check each figure against the table and summarise the overall pattern more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement, with an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for male and female figures. This makes the information easy to locate, and sequencing within each paragraph generally follows the age groups. However, the organisation is somewhat repetitive: both detail paragraphs repeat the same ranking pattern, while comparisons between males and females are mostly left implicit. Linking phrases such as “By contrast” and “followed by” help, but some transitions are mechanical, and the overview’s “However” does not express a clear contrast. To improve progression, group the sexes together by age range or directly compare their figures, and use linking expressions only where the relationship between ideas is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “recorded,” “stood at,” “followed by,” and “registered,” so the figures are generally understandable. There is also some variation in how you describe values and rankings. However, several expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “accounted for the highest,” “recorded at 18 hours,” and “approximately same as the male group.” Repeated use of “age group” and “figure” also makes the report less flexible. Choose more natural collocations for describing data, and vary your wording without forcing synonyms. For example, “the highest figure was recorded among males aged 16–20” is clearer and more idiomatic than “males accounted for the highest.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple statements and some more complex forms, including the contrast in “whereas 51+ age group recorded the lowest” and the relative clause “which was the lowest figure.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles and prepositions are often missing or misplaced, as in “In the 16-20” and “In the 16-20 age the female recorded at 18 hours.” There are also punctuation problems, including the comma attached to “whereas, the figure” and inconsistent spacing before full stops. Aim to form complete, consistent patterns such as “Among females aged 16–20, the figure was 18 hours,” and proofread articles, prepositions and punctuation.
