Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given table below ilustrate information about average hours spent on the internet by European people of different age of groups. This contains both male and female.

Overall from the age of 11-25 in average hours spent on internet male is dominated on female. After this at 26-30 their ratio remains same and furthermore at 31-50 and 51 females ratio is dominated on male.

Firstly at age of 11-15 average hours spent on internet by male is 8 and by female is 6. Than at age of 16-20 this ratio is immensively increased, Male ratio is 19 hours and females is 18 hours and at 21-25 this ratio rapidly decreased at male spent 7 hours and female spent 5 hours. Furthermore at 26-30 this ratio is remains same and then at 31-50 average hours of female dominated on male in the ratio of 3:4 and then at 51 and above this ratio again decreased and remains at 2:3.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You report the figures accurately and identify the main pattern: males spend more time online in the younger groups, the figures are equal at 26–30, and females are higher in the two oldest groups. The peak at ages 16–20 and the subsequent decline are also included. However, the overview is awkwardly expressed, and the response mainly lists values rather than clearly summarising the most important features and comparisons. For example, the female advantage in the older groups could be stated directly, alongside the overall peak and fall. The response is 146 words, below the required 150, so it does not meet the minimum length. Develop the overview and comparisons slightly further while keeping the report focused on the table.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, with an introductory sentence, an overview, and a paragraph describing the age groups in sequence. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow, and the age-band order is logical. However, progression is limited because most of the detail is presented as one long sequence, with repeated transitions such as “at age,” “then,” and “furthermore.” Some linking is also inaccurate or unclear: “After this” does not specify which age group is meant, while “this ratio” is used repeatedly without a clear reference. Organise the details into clearer comparisons—for example, the younger groups and the older groups—and use fewer, more precise linking phrases to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the table, including “average hours,” “increased,” “decreased,” and “ratio,” so the reader can understand the general comparisons. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “male is dominated on female,” “females ratio,” and “this ratio rapidly decreased.” “Ratio” is also not the best term when comparing hours; “figure” or “time spent” would be clearer. There are spelling errors, including “ilustrate” and “Than,” and repeated wording makes the report less precise. Build a small set of accurate comparison phrases, such as “men spent more time than women” and “the figures were equal,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences linked with words such as “and,” “after,” and “then.” The figures are generally understandable, but the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently. For example, “The given table below ilustrate” has subject–verb agreement problems, while “at 26-30 this ratio is remains same” combines incompatible verb forms. Articles and prepositions are also often missing or incorrectly used, as in “spent on internet” and “at age of 11-15.” Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, including the capitalised “Male” within a sentence. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and simple comparison structures first, then combine them into longer sentences only when the grammar remains controlled.
