IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
This table provides data on Eurpean citizens who spent time online of various age groups from 11 years to more than 51.
Overall, in both gender 16 to 20 years old adults spent maximum hours online while older spent less time.
Look more closely, in female who was more than 51 spent 3 hours and mens consumes 2 hours. Subsequently, teenager boys used internet 8 hours while girls spent 6 hours on mobile phone.
Further, the individuals who was from 26 to 30 spent same time on internet was 240 minutes. Female consumes 18 hours of a day online and boys used internet for 19 hour who was in age of 16-20.
To conclude, the table data illustrates age group 26 to 30 spent equal time, while adults ownwards to 16 spent a significant time on internet. Lowest ratio was in older people just 2 to 3 hours of a day.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main pattern that the 16–20 group spends the most time online and that usage is lower among older groups. You also report several relevant figures, including 19 and 18 hours for this peak group and 2 and 3 hours for people aged 51+. However, the overview is incomplete: it does not clearly summarise the overall decline after ages 16–20 or the small differences between males and females. Some details are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the 26–30 figures are 4 hours for each gender, not 240 minutes as stated, and the table gives hours without specifying that they are per day. The response therefore selects relevant information but only partially and sometimes imprecisely reports the key features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, detail paragraphs and a concluding sentence. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Further” signal movement between points. However, progression is not consistently clear: the details jump from the oldest group to teenagers, then to ages 26–30 and back to 16–20. “Subsequently” does not express a clear relationship between the groups, and the conclusion repeats earlier points rather than synthesising them. Some references, such as “adults ownwards to 16,” are difficult to interpret. Group the figures in a logical order—for example, peak usage, then the decline across older groups—and use linking expressions only when their relationship is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “age groups,” “spent,” “hours online” and “table data,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning awkward: “spent time online of various age groups,” “consumes 2 hours,” and “lowest ratio” are not natural ways to describe these figures. “Mobile phone” also introduces a device that the table does not mention. Spelling errors such as “Eurpean” and “mens” further reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, repeated-use-safe expressions such as “spent X hours online,” “the figure for females,” and “the lowest amount of time.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts to use more than simple sentences, including the overview clause beginning “while older spent less time,” but control is inconsistent and many sentences contain errors that can make the relationships difficult to follow. Examples include “in both gender,” “female who was more than 51 spent,” and “individuals who was from 26 to 30 spent same time.” These show problems with agreement, articles and sentence construction. The phrase “boys used internet for 19 hour who was in age of 16-20” also has an unclear clause structure and number agreement. Build accurate simple comparisons first, then add subordinate clauses carefully; for example, “Males aged 16–20 spent 19 hours online, compared with 18 hours for females.”
