IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table illustrates the information about the average hours spent on the internet by European individuals of various age groups.
Overall, it is evident that 16-20 aged male and female is accounted for the largest number of hours, while those over 51 aged male is recorded for the lowest hour of internet use. Additionally, rest of the different age groups have a moderate number in both gender.
Looking at the talbe more closley, there is 19 hours in male and 18 hours female in 16-20, which demonstrates the largest consumer of the internet. This is followed by 11-15 and 21-25 with 1 hour difference in both male and female recording 8 and 6, 7 and 5 respectively.
In contrast, there is only 2 hours internet utilization in male and 3 hours in female who are over 51 age. Meanwhile, although there is a similarity in female hours of 26-30 and 31-50, there is only one hour difference in male.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group records the highest figures for both sexes, while the 51+ group has the lowest male figure. You also report several key values correctly, including 19 and 18 hours for ages 16–20 and 2 and 3 hours for those over 51. However, the overview is partly unclear: “moderate number” does not distinguish the middle age groups, and the comparison of ages 26–30 and 31–50 is not fully explained. The table shows equal figures for both sexes at 26–30, then a one-hour female advantage at 31–50. The response is also two words below the 150-word minimum, which limits how fully the comparisons are developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting details. The progression from the highest-use age group to younger and older groups is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “This is followed by” and “In contrast” help signal comparisons. Some links are less effective or leave relationships unclear. For example, “Additionally, rest of the different age groups have a moderate number” is vague, while “Meanwhile” does not clearly explain the contrast in the final sentence. Improve cohesion by grouping the age bands systematically and stating the comparison directly, rather than relying on broad linking phrases. This would make the organisation more precise and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing the table, including “largest,” “followed by,” “similarity,” and “difference,” so the main information remains understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “largest consumer of the internet,” “recorded for the lowest hour,” and “internet utilization.” There are also spelling errors in “talbe” and “closley.” These issues make the description less natural and sometimes imprecise, despite an adequate range of task-related vocabulary. Aim for standard data-reporting expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, describe figures as hours “spent online” or “recorded,” rather than describing age groups as consumers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “although” and the relative clause in “those over 51 aged male.” The meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain. For instance, “16-20 aged male and female is accounted” has incorrect agreement and an awkward passive structure; “there is 19 hours in male” also uses an unsuitable construction. In “there is only one hour difference in male,” the article is missing. Use clear patterns such as “Males aged 16–20 spent 19 hours” and “the figure for females was 18 hours.” More consistent control of these structures would improve accuracy.
