Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table compares information about the average hours spent on the internet by European people of different age groups.

Overall, teenagers spent by far the most time on internet. While internet usage decreased significantly with age after twenty. Males usually spent more hours as compared to females. Aged people over fifty spent least time on internet.

In the 11-15 age group, boys spent 8 hours while girls spent 6 hours. This figure rose dramatically to 19 hours for males and 18 hours for females in the age bracket of 16-20 years and that figure was the highest of all ages.

After the age of 20, internet usage fell down sharply. For age 21-25, figure drops substantially to 7 hours for males and and 5 hours for females, whereas for age 26-30 remains stable at 4% for both males and females. At age 31-50, internet slightly decline for male at 3% and remain constant 4% for females. Aged people over fifty are the lowest of all at 2 and 3%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group records the highest figures for both sexes, and usage generally declines among older groups. The specific values you report for the first three age bands and the oldest group match the table. However, the overview that males “usually” spend more time is too broad: females equal males at 26–30 and exceed them at 31–50. Also, the figures for 26–30 and 31–50 are incorrectly labelled as percentages rather than hours. The response covers the task and selects relevant comparisons, but some details and the gender comparison are not fully precise. State the overall pattern with these exceptions and report units consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the younger and older groups. The progression from the peak at 16–20 to lower figures in later age bands is easy to follow, and phrases such as “After the age of 20” help signal the shift. Cohesion is less controlled in places, however. The overview begins “While internet usage decreased…” as a sentence fragment, and “that figure” is used ambiguously after two sex-specific values. The final paragraph also strings several age bands together, making the comparisons feel compressed. Use complete sentences and clearer references, and group the later figures in a more deliberate comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “rose dramatically,” “highest,” “decreased,” and “fell…sharply,” which helps describe the main trends. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, though: “spent…time on internet” needs a more natural collocation, “Aged people” is not an appropriate label, and “figure drops substantially” is less suitable when describing a past table. “Stable” also suggests no change across a period, whereas the table compares separate age groups. In addition, calling the values “4%” and “3%” is a word-choice and unit error. Aim for precise terms such as “hours,” “older adults,” and “stood at” when reporting values.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “While internet usage decreased…” and the clause beginning “whereas.” Most of the intended meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. “While internet usage decreased significantly with age after twenty” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “figure drops” shifts into the present tense after past-tense reporting. In “for age 26–30 remains stable,” the subject is missing, while “internet slightly decline” has incorrect verb agreement and tense. There is also a repeated “and” in “7 hours for males and and 5 hours.” Build complete clauses, maintain past tense, and check subject–verb agreement and punctuation.
