IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided table presents the information regarding the average hours spent on the internet by different age groups of European people.
Overall, the maximum number of time was spent by age group of 16 to 20, whereas people aged above 50 spent least of time on the internet. Surprisingly, in all age group upto 30, men spent either higher or same time on internet comparing to women.
The age group of 16-20 accounted for the highest number of time spenting online with male using internet for 19 hours and female 18 hours. In the age group of 11 to 15, boys spent 8 hours and girls spent 6 hours, followed by age group of 21 to 25, where male spent 7 hours online and female spent 5 hours on average.
Both male and femal spent identically average of 4 hours in age group of 26 to 30. Similarly in group having age of 32 to 50, male spent 3 hours and female spent 4 hours. And in the last group having age above 50, male spent average of 2 hours and female spent 3 hours on internet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group records the highest figures, while the 51+ group records the lowest, and you compare male and female use across the age bands. The specific figures are generally reported correctly, including the equal four hours for ages 26–30. However, the overview could be more precise: “in all age group upto 30” overlooks that men also spend more in the 21–25 group, while the 31–50 and 51+ groups show women spending more. You also refer to “32 to 50” rather than the table’s 31–50 category. A clearer overview of the overall peak, decline, and gender pattern would make the summary more complete and better developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs reporting the figures. The age groups are presented in a mostly logical sequence, and linking phrases such as “followed by” and “Similarly” help connect comparisons. This gives the report coherent organisation. Some connections are mechanical or unclear, however: “And in the last group” is an informal way to introduce the final comparison, and “Similarly” does not quite express the relationship between the 26–30 and 31–50 groups, where the gender pattern changes. The overview and detail paragraphs could also be linked more deliberately by grouping the figures around the main trends rather than listing each band. More precise transitions and referencing would strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “average,” “age group,” “spent,” and “accounted for,” so the meaning is generally clear. There is also some attempt to vary expressions for internet use. However, several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems limit precision: “maximum number of time,” “highest number of time spenting,” and “spent least of time” are not natural English. “Using internet” also needs a more idiomatic expression, and “femal” is misspelled. Repetition of “spent” and “age group” makes the vocabulary range feel limited. Aim for accurate collocations such as “the highest average,” “spent the most time online,” and “internet use,” while checking spelling and avoiding awkward attempts at variation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple statements and longer comparative sentences, and most of the data remains understandable. The overview’s “whereas” clause and the sentence beginning “In the age group of 11 to 15” show some ability to connect information. However, errors occur in sentence structure and grammatical forms. For example, “people aged above 50 spent least of time” needs an article or a different construction, while “with male using internet” is an awkward and incomplete pattern. “Both male and femal spent identically average of 4 hours” also has problems with number, article use, and sentence construction. The final sentence begins with “And,” which weakens formal punctuation and sentence control. More accurate comparative structures and careful checking of articles and plurals would improve reliability.
